My computer just started doing this yesterday. it will not hibernate when I shut the lid or click hibernate. I was able to do a system restore to an earlier period, but that didn't fix it. Now, I cannot do a system restore at all. It just sits there on the screen "Preparing to restore your system."
When I try to shut down, the screen will sit on "Shutting down", but never finish.
Like I said, this just started yesterday. I cannot pinpoint anything that I did to cause this.

dude i feel your pain. it took a few days for me to get the issue solved but i did with the help of this guys. the issue with my pc was a driver that was causing the error. follow the steps this guys showed me and see if that works for you. i am now using 7600 build instead of the 7100 but i did solve the issue before i went to the retail version of win 7

Boot into your Windows 7 DVD Repair console and see if you can SysRestore to before the restore point you ran.
If not, try Startup Repair repeatedly as it may need to run several fixes.

I did this and there are quite a few errors and warnings, too many to google all of them. or am i looking for something sepcific. DOes this mean i should just re-installed all together. I had vista 64 on my laptop and qualified for the free upgrade to win 7. I completed the upgrade but since i upgraded my windows wont shut down. It just says shutting down forever and never actaully shuts down. Plus my SD card reader only works at certain times. When i tried to reinstall the drivers for it they just start to install but thats as far as that gets as well. Hp pavilion dv6-1245dx 4gb ram.

Did you use an upgrade from the manufacturer or was it a standard upgrade dvd? If it's a standard upgrade dvd you might want to do a full install, in fact I'd probably do a full install anyways as something might have had a conflict from Vista to win7
Upgrades are apparently buggy as the upgrade script is a little funky I've been told.

Yes it is an upgrade version from HP. So i wouldnt be able to full install. I would have to install vista 1st and then do the upgrade. Wouldn't it just give me the same results? My system never shuts down, it just hangs there, and I just tried uninstalling itunes and reinstalling it and i couldnt even uninstall....I would love to do a full clean install but i only have the upgrade. My friend has the full cd but I dont think i'll be bale to use my cd key for that version. Wont MS know that i am using an upgrade key for the full version? and it prevent the install? Or are u telling me to install vista and then do the upgrade?

They have threads on doing a full install with the upgrade disc. Or you could find out what version you purchased and borrow a cd from a friend? OOOO Get one of the 7100 build CDs, install and then upgrade? I know you can upgrade from 7100, you'd just have to make an image and edit it, then mount in daemon tools. You can find plenty of ways to do a full install

You can absolutely do a clean install, even to a new or formatted HD with the Upgrade DVD.

Did you receive an Upgrade Kit from HP? Isn't one of the disks a clean copy of Windows 7 DVD with a product key? This is what MS required of manufacturers.
Drivers/apps should be on a second CD for you to pick from.
Boot from the Win7 DVD, select Custom>Advanced drive tools to format and install.
I have done clean installs already for Acer, Dell and Gateway Vista-to-Win7 Upgrade Kits.
