system not shutting down

Well i got around to installing a fresh copy of windows 7 but when I try to boot from disc that is the windows 7 upgrade disc I really dont get anywhere. Once i restart it never asks me to boot from disc. ive tried hit the F buttons to select boot method but i dont get anywhere there either. Is my laptop not booting from the disc cuz its a upgrade disc and maybe nmot the full version? I dont think i, allowed to turn off boot methods either so only my cdrom drive will boot. I can only change the order i beleive and doing that does nothing.. thanks for the help.

Yes, When i bought the laptop it came with vista 64. I got the windows 7 home upgrade disc in the mail and upgraded it. Since i upgraded it I have several problems. I was told that the upgrade disc that i got from hp was the full version of windows 7 and that i should do a clean install. Well I just tried to do that but when i try to reboot with the disc in the drive and the boot sequence set to cdrom drive 1st it never prompts me to boot from disc. So to answer your question yes, i do have windows 7 home edition on here but it was upgraded from vista and i want to reinstall a clean install.

You say you set the CD ROM drive to boot first in BIOS. This is a DVD.

Try setting DVD drive to boot first, or tap the key given on first bootup screen for Boot Menu to make a one-time boot selection.

Lets make sure that disk is a bootable Win7 DVD installer.

Was there more than one disk in the Upgrade kit?

What does the Win7 DVD say on it?

As suggested, try running it from desktop to see what it says. Does it appear like this when you run it or click setup?



If so, you can continue to clean install from the desktop, overwriting Vista. It will place your old files in a windows.old folder that you can delete after retrieving them.

My kit came with 2 cds. one is an upgrade manager and the other is windows 7 home premium upgrade media disc. I cant tell u what the cd actually does on the desktop cuz after i run setup windows never loads anything. This is partially the reason why i want to reinstall cuz have my crap doesnt work properly. the upgrade manager disc says to insert 1st. Sorry i cant help more, i'll have to wait to insert the disc into another pc to see what it does.

Place the Win7 DVD into the tray of your computer, restart computer, look on first bootup screen for key given for Boot Menu, select DVD to boot.

If this fails, enter BIOS setup using key given for that on first bootup screen, usually F2. Set DVD drive to boot first . Then restart, look for prompt to "press any key to boot DVD" and do so.

Select Custom install, use Drive tools to delete all, create New partition(s) as you wish, then format first partition before installing Win7.

As a last resort, to force DVD to run you can delete the drive using a utlity like DBAN.

I have GWScan which is WD LIfeguard. Will diagnose/repair and then zero almost any HD.

It can autostart so doesn't need to boot.

Then the DVD will autostart on a deleted drive.

thats what problem i was having. I am never prompted to boot from disc upon start up and even i change bios to boot disc from what i remember last time i tried it still didnt do anything. Ive tried the f buttons to select a temp boot but no good either.

Watch carefully which key it says to tap on first screen to access the Boot Menu and tap that key. If you have to reboot to do it correctly then do so.

If you can see clearly that there is no Boot Menu choice, Then look for key to Enter BIOS setup and tap that key.

Please tell what files are on the DVD when you Open it. Make a screenshot using Snipping Tool in Start menu, attach using paper clip in reply box.

Please install ImgBurn, insert DVD, select "Create Image File From Disk" and see if the results say Bootable like the one below Attachment 45639
