Copy, cut & paste question

I move a lot of data on my SSDs, and thus I try to reduce the amount of data that I write to my drives. One method is to cut a file and paste it to the new location where I want it to be. The theory being is that if I cut the file rather than copy it I won't have double the amount of data written on the drive.

So with that. Does cut actually move data, or is it still replicating data on the HDD? I also have a Move To in the context menu. Does this also just move the data or is it duplicating the data in the background on the drive?

Cutting a file to a different folder on the same partition doesn't write any data, it just changes the logical path of the file. However, using cut for a file on a different partition will basically copy the file and delete the original, so it writes data to the HDD.

I don't know about the "Move To" feature in the context menu, in fact I don't even have this option.

All windows copy or move operations are intrinsically the same - they are move functions, the copy does not delete the original entry whereas the Move does, this done as a safeguard to prevent accidental deletion of the original during the operation the delete will not be actioned until the move has been completed

As has been stated the actual process is different dependent on whether the operation is within a single drive or a seperate drive but the process is the same but just applies to the location information if on the same drive

If you right click a file and drag it to the new destination, there should be an option dialog 'move or copy here' when you release the mouse.

Why is that even important?
SSDs aren't the terribly unreliable monsters they were right after their introduction. Any reasonable disk will endure many TBs out of writes nowadays, not to mention that wear leveling does a great job.
There is no need to worry about it anymore.

Okay, thanks all.

To answer the Move to option, I've added that with a registry key. Just Google, "move to registry entry."

To answer the SSD statement. I have had my fare share of SSD failures. Thus I try to minimize what is written to the drive, any and all thrashing, etc. I even turn off indexing and use Everything.exe instead which is a lot more powerful. Granted the SSDs I've had were all based on the Sandforce chipset so that may be why they all failed withen a few years. Never the less, I try to take care of what I use and own.
