Windows 7 not seeing Hard Drive

Hi all,

My first post on these forums - I have installed Windows 7 Build: 7000 on a dual boot configuration with Windows Vista Ultimate x64 - the problem I am getting is that Windows 7 does *not* see all my my hard drives, where as Windows Vista does. I have checked Disk Management (as I read some posts saying a drive letter had to be assigned) but the Disks cannot be detected there either.

Any ideas on this one? Is this a known Windows 7 issue? I am sorry if there has already been a thread of this nature but I did have a look around on the Forums.

Sorry...not a good first post - I have rectified the issue. So mods could you close this thread - apologies!

If anyone is getting the same issue look in Device Manager and check if the Drive is enabled - for some weird reason Windows 7 disabled my Hard drive :S

Well I did say what I did :P but heres a more detailed version:

Press the Start Button > Right click on "Computer" the select "Manage" > Under the System Tools category select "Device Manager" > Under the Disk Drives section check if there are any drives with a downward arrow next to them if so then right click on the selected drive an select "Enable"

The drive should then pop up in Computer, if not I would suggest looking in Disk Management which is located in the Storage section of Computer Management and then assign it a drive letter.

Thank god you went ahead and posted your "how to" guide. I had a
P!R@TED version of Windows 7 Ultimate but loved it so much that I had to buy it. After I activated it and everything, 7 didn't see all of my drives. I was like what a waste of money. But after seeing your post and resolving the issue in accordance with what you said, I was reinvigorated with energy towards my purchase! Thank you and I would like to thank Microsoft for making a product actually worth my time and money!

I had that happen with a Win7 beta and when I enabled the drive all my data was gone! It was not a good day.

I get this with a flash drive. Says to "reinstall driver" (Code 18), but when I have it scan for updated drivers, it comes back with "the best driver for your device is already installed," like an endless loop. Says the "device is up to date" for the USB mass storage device. This is one I use on a 32-bit win 7 laptop. A 64 bit laptop also accesses it just fine.

THEN I get the same with this particular install when I attach a USB HD. Like Win 7 went buggy or something. Probably some time degradation SW on the eval versions that make it more and more of a PITA to use now that win 7 has launched.

Wanted to say thank you for the tip to use disk mgt to fix the non showing up HD.

I had to setup Valid Partion on the DRive inside disk mgt. It showed the drive but no volume, I think I right clicked on it, and chose add volume or some such, Once I did that, the drive showd up! So thanks!
