Windows 7 - file open by other

Hi all,
Newbie here
I have one PC that continues to display a shaded file withthe ~$filename that indicates the file is open by another, but I have 2 otherPC’s that no longer will display the ~$filename if someone has a file open on ashared network drive, or even if open on the local drive.

These are on Windows 7 Pro PC’s. Below the file 13SEP.doc is open, but thereis no ~$filename showing the file is open by another.

Is there a fix to get the PC’s to display the file openlock again?

Thank you to those that had a look, but I figured it out finally.
Open a file folder, and on the left there is the "Organize" and from Layout, removed the Library Pane view.
Plus just check that, I turned it back on and it will still show what it wasn't before. The other thing I did was turn off Indexing.
Perhaps the Indexing service was the actual cause - anyway, thank you all. I have resolved.

Well I thought I had this resolved, but went right back to the same as originally posted.

I'm not sure how to go about this other than suggesting to use this tool to find out what process is opening that file. LockHunter Screenshot Guide

Yes, it's a file/folder unlocker, but it may tell you what process is using that file.

Once found, it may clue you in to what App is causing this and then you can take action. If you find out what process is responsible post its name here.

If it's something common like explorer.exe, then what I'd do is run Process Hacker, right click the responsible process and look at the environment tab. That too may clue you in as to what's going on.

I'm afraid I don't know too much about Windows file sharing, Samba and all that since I refuse to use it. In fact, I turn off NetBIOS in all of my computers.

Thanks, I'll scope the suggestions out. It is funny as this happens on my local hard drive, and on shared folders hosted on our Windows 2003 Domain Controller/Server. It started on a newer PC we just had built too with Win 7 Pro. For a moment I thought I had it resolved when I turned off Indexing Service. I know on my XP Virtual Machine Indexing was causing all sorts of grief, and when I turned it off the Virtual Machine came right. No more corrupt catalog file error. I'll have to check the Domain Controller and see if Indexing is turned on as well. It doesn't happen at home with my Win 7 Pro 32bit. And I use 7+ Task Bar Tweaker on all my PC's with Win 7. I thought it was it at first since it had just updated itself. It must be related to a recent update from MS that was installed on the PC's and Domain Controllers/Servers.

Funny, I'm an old IT Manager too...LOL...Novell 3.12 / 4.11 days and going back to DOS 3.2...LOL.
I've had to deal with lost/corrupt profiles and recover those and other things, but this is kicking me all over the place.
Anyway, thank you. Will advise what I find in the long of this mess.

I find updates cause too many issues myself. I actually don't even use 'em. LOL I guess all you really need are the criticals.

When you open a Word document it will create the ~$filename.docx with the HA attributes (hidden + archive).
If the computer crashes etc, Word doesn't close the document and doesn't delete the ~$filename.docx
Is your Explorer set to show hidden files? (Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Folder Options - View tab)
