Wallpaper; Desktop Background doesn't scan for new thumbnails

    Win7 Pro
For changing Wallpaper images under Desktop background, the O/S isn't scanning for new images added to the Wallpaper folder. All it show are placeholders for the image which is usually the icon for the default image program (IfanView).

This does not have to do with Explorer windows, just wallpaper selection.

    1. If I use Disk Cleanup/Thumbnails and check that, all of the thumbnails disappear and they don't repopulate themselves. Now it only shows 3MB of disk space.
    2. I do have "Always show icons never thumbnails" unchecked
    3. I use IRfan View as my default image viewer not ACDsee, but I have read removing or un-associating that doesn't work either.
    4. Again, this has nothing to do with 'Explorer' folders icons or thumbnails.

Lastly, I can still choose one of these icons and the image does show on the desktop as wallpaper, but I have to do just that to find out what it is in the first place which is annoying.

The placeholders are not new photos in that folder. There were thumbnails there before, they just disappeared.

I understand that the Personalization Gallery has stopped showing desktop background wallpaper preview thumbnails.

Leads me to think 1) that you may have some file corruption. Or 2) User profile may be corrupted.

Have you ran the System File Check scan SFC /scannow ? To check for file corruptions.

Alternatively, can you create a new user profile, and see if problem is replicated there.

For some reason e-mail notifications were turned off in the forum.

Anyway, I ran SFC, but it closed before it completed. I ran it twice, I didn't see how far it completed the 1st time, but the 2nd it closed after 43% complete. No errors were shown.

In the default profile, I did not have any wallpaper chosen, so I did, the folder showed, but over half of the thumbnails were missing. Ok, question; what service is required for these to be registered/scanned??

I did create a new account, but the same problem. I also see the problem using 'content or 'tiles' view in Explorer (I have always used "Details" in Explorer windows so I wouldn't of noticed it there).

The actual service required for the Personalisation to run is called Themes. It is safe to disable/re-enable this service.

However, if you now discovered this issue in explorer, then you might have a problem with the icon cache and if you like, you can Rebuild Icon Cache. See if that does the trick in Explorer, in Personalisation.
