    Hi All,
@Chris Nicola : Sir, about your latest experiment!
    1) Are you sure you have installed Linux on your SSD & booting from it ? When you boot into a Linux installation media, it gives you the option of running linux directly from USB/CD-DVD & do not need to actually install it to a HDD or SSD. Even you can maintain a linux os fully on a usb pendrive with persistent storage feature.
    2) If you have booted in linux from SSD, Then you should definitely give a try to windows 10 Pro 64.
    https://www.howtogeek.com/244678/you...se-windows-10/
( Simply proceed with win 10 pro x64 installation & avoid/skip typing a product key when asked )

    Anything else ?

    Let us know.

    Thanks & Regards. ...

Thank you for the suggestions. Yes it was booting into Ubuntu from the SSD. The boot delay for restarting/cold start was the same (maybe 5 mins) and was about half the time compared to Windows 7.

I tried reinstalling Win 7 Home and let the windows installation delete the old partitions. This time the SSD was not marked as unknown. I installed the drivers and there were no issues in device manager. The problem persisted with the 10-15 minute boot delay from a cold start.

I succeeded in installing Win 10 home with all the updates. No problems in device manager. I selected the high performance power plan and fast boot in the Win 10 settings. Still a 10-15 minute boot delay. The difference with Windows 10 is I get the 10-15 min delay with both restarting and a cold start. With windows 7 the restart was instant and only the cold start was delayed.

    Kind regards
    Chris

I wonder if it may be a (weird) graphics driver issue.

Linux includes open source (reverse engineered) drivers.
    These may not be optimal.

When you boot into Ubuntu, you can open the "Driver Manager" and check if it has Proprietary Drivers available (e.g. Nvidia graphics drivers).
The dialogue window should list any other drivers that you could try.

Here is a screenshot from Linux Mint 18 (I'm not sure how Ubuntu does it these days).
Lenovo G585 Won't boot After Upgrading To SSD-lm18-driver-manager-02.png
The screenshot shows "Driver Manager" in the "All" category.
You should be able to use Search to find it.

IMO, you should avoid W10, unless you want to spend hours fixing issues caused by updates (every couple of weeks).
The latest upgrade (1809) totally deleted some users personal files (supposedly MS has fixed it).

W10 is a "slow motion train wreck" and it has been ever since its release.

Thanks lehnerus2000 for the tip regarduing Linux drivers. Thanks also for alerting me to the bugs and issues with the Windows 1809 update (its somewhat frightning to think of the possibility losing all your data!). I did try Win 10 on the laptop when I had the option of the free upgrade but decided to stick with Win 7. Its stable on the laptop and my older programmes and drivers continue to work. I installed Ubuntu temporatily just to see if it would cure the boot issue. Ubuntu booted faster (5 min delay instead of a 10 min delay) but the basic problem remained. I also tested Windows 10 on the laptop but it did not solve the 10-15 min delayed boot issue.

Generally SSD's consume less power than HDD's but under load they can consume more power.
    https://www.quora.com/Do-SSDs-use-more-or-less-power-than-HDDs-and-by-how-much

What I think is happening is that when the SSD starts up, the motherboard cannot supply enough power and there is a voltage drop and the SSD goes into some kind of hibernation mode to protect the data. Then after 10-15 minutes when the firmware detects that the power appears stable it starts to work at normal speed. This is just speculation of course.

I wish to thank everyone for helping me with this issue. I have tried everything, but it appears there is no solution to this issue. Evidently, this particular SSD is incompatible with the laptop hardware. So I have decided to put back the old HDD and forget about it. If in the future I can get hold of another brand of SSD I might try again.

    Kind regards

    Hi,
    @Chris Nicola : Sir,
I was still on but if you give up here, I would also switch off. Let me know!
I can't commit anything, but there are points you are missing. At the same time, I understand that it is not a base for experimentation.
Another thing to say is : No matter how perfectly you plug/unplug the HDD/SDD, you can still lose the base, seat, etc. So, Do not change drives frequently.
As for win 10, the inputs by sir lehnerus2000 are really surprising. To avoid any issues, I would always download the second latest iso release & won't make any updates (The second latest release is April 2018 as of now!) I will disable the IE/EDGE browser as they are infection prone & would put in a good paid antivirus for the security charge. Because one day, we all will get to upgrade to win 10 or keep applying hacks on win 7.
Your experimentation & observations kept on startling every now & then. I really appreciate it. It was a wonderful experience working with you.

    Thanks & Regards. ...

Thank you very much for your helpful and tireless support Vineet. I really appreciate it. I have learned a lot from you and from all the others who have commented on this thread. However, I have decided to give up on this particular SSD.

Thanks again to everyone who has offered their kind help.

    Kind regards

    The Final Solution

I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to post the final solution in case it will be useful to someone with a similar problem in the future.

Recap: My Lenovo G575 worked fine with the original HD. I fitted an SSD. Even after a fresh install of Win 7, it would have a 15 minute delay with a flashing cursor before finally booting into windows.

Final solution. It appears that this particular brand of ssd (Silicon Power Sata3 S55 220Gb -latest firmware installed) was not compatible with this particular laptop. Another brand of SSD worked fine.

Recently, I installed the same Silicon power S55 ssd into my old HP dv6500 and it worked fine. So there was nothing wrong with it. It was just not compatible with the Lenovo G575 (type 4383).

Last week I purchased a Crucial MX500 250 Gbt SSD and installed it in my Lenovo G575 and it boots without any problems!

Why the other Silicon Valley SSD didn't work properly is still a mystery. I suspect the reason might be that the Lenovo could not deliver the correct voltage from a cold start that the ssd required to make it start up immediately.

I hope this information will be useful to someone who may face a similar issue.

    Kind regards
    Chris

    Greets,

    Thanks for the update.

I would like to mention a few things :

    1. Latest firmware is not the best.

    2. BIOS Updates are sometimes crucial in these cases but it seems no BIOS updates are available for your laptop. Still the Storage, Chipset, Other drivers & other Resources from manufacturer may play crucial. Sometimes they also mention the compatible parts list.

    3. Recently got recommendation from a Senior for Memory & Storage Upgradation info : Crucial System Scanner

    Thanks. ...

Thank you Vineet for your comments and for all your previous help with this issue. Thanks for the Crucial System scanner link. I didn't know that it existed!

Before buying another SSD, I contacted Crucial e mail chat and they confirmed that the BX500 and the MX500 would be compatible with the Lenovo G575. But they recommended the MX500 as it is faster and has a 5 year guarantee. So far its working fine.

    Kind regards

    @ Chris Nicola

    Thank you for your update.
I am about to clone my Win-7 PRO x64 HDD onto an SSD (to be purchased) for Lenovo E540 Edge.
The PC - HDD is 2015 vintage, stable and tests confirm it is OK (so far).
