Dell Laptop Date Retention Problem

After starting up my Dell Laptop for the first time in several years, it began to exhibit a problem with the date and time. It requires me to set up the time and date in the BIOS, otherwise it initializes to a date in 2006 that is a year or so before I purchased the computer.

Hi ROsness,

If you set date and time in BIOs, and then date and time in windows, then power down your computer, start it and the date and time are changed then your CMOS battery needs to be replaced!

All personal computers have a small battery on the motherboard that provides power to the Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) chip, hence the name CMOS battery. ... You can expect the CMOS battery to last for up to five years. The more your computer is used, the longer the battery will last. & vice-versa.

Hi Snick,

Aha! That thought hadn't crossed my mind, but it makes perfect sense. I'm off to find a Youtube video telling me how to access the motherboard.

Thank you!

Yep, good idea! It's not that difficult to replace a CMOS battery.
I would have posted the link for the video but you didn't specify the laptop model.

Let us know your results.

You have several errors there. I'm wondering if the hard drive is going. Go to the Start orb, in search enter CMD. Right click CMD and open as Admin. Type in chkdsk C:

After it runs read this: Read Event Viewer Log for Check Disk (chkdsk) in Windows 7 / Windows 8

You can find a replacement battery here: d620 cmos battery | eBay

Thanks to all for your help and suggestions. The replacement battery needs an attached (spotwelded) 2-pin plug, which I was able to order from Amazon for $7.50 with 2-day free shipping. I also appreciated the link to the service manual - detailed instructions for replacing anything in the D620. I'll report back when it's all up and running again.
