Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit suddenly randomly waking up

    Hi everyone --

Over the past few years, I would put my Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit computer to sleep, and it would remain in that state until I moved my mouse or used my keyboard. Over the last three weeks, my computer has suddenly started waking up. My Logitech MK270 mouse & keyboard are both wireless, using the same USB receiver.

What's weird is both have on/off switches, and the computer wakes up even though they're both in the off position. If they're both physically disabled, how can they be waking the computer? All of my network options have "wake" options disabled. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Powercfg -lastwake shows the following:
    Wake History Count - 1
    Wake History [0]
    Wake Source Count - 1
    Wake Source [0]
     Type: Device
    Instance Path: USB\VID_046D&PID_C534\5&3afd18bd&0&5
    Friendly Name:
    Description: USB Composite Device
    Manufacturer: (Standard USB Host Controller)

    Powercfg -devicequery wake_armed shows:
    Logitech HID-Compliant Keyboard
    Logitech HID-Compliant Cordless Mouse

    Powercfg -waketimers shows:
There are no active wake timers in the system.

    Thanks!
    Brian

Is it possible a program is waking the computer? Maybe something that updates regularly, like your antivirus or some utility? Windows Updates?

It could be. Is there any way you know of that I could find out if a program might be waking my computer? I think the steps I've taken thusfar have been hardware related. I've had the same antivirus for a long time and haven't made any changes to Windows Update. It seems to be waking up at completely randomly, as far as I know.

Hello Brian, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you haven't already, you might check your wake event logs to see if they may be able to help ID a source.

Hi, and thanks for the suggestion. If I'm reading this info correctly, practically every instance says "Wake Source: Device -USB Composite device" with the occasional "Wake Source: Power Button," which I remember personally doing recently. I remeber my computer waking at 3:11 AM, and it's logged here, the cause being "USB Composite device," same as the others.

Do you have anything else connected via USB? If so, disconnect them to see if the computer still wakes.

You might also see if connecting the USB receiver for the keyboard/mouse to another USB port (ex: on back of motherboard) to see if the computer still wakes.

Good suggestions. I'll unplug absolutely everything tonight, just because I have the feeling that if the mouse and keyboard can wake it from sleeping even with their power switches turned to the off position, removing the wireless receiver altogether might still result in the computer waking, too.

As for what else is plugged into USB ports, I have a wifi antenna, a couple of Western Digital Passport hard drives, a USB 3.0 hub, and a USB extension cable connecting to the mouse/keyboard receiver. I had to do that because without it, the keyboard would kind of "sleep" sometimes, like fail to respond unless I started hitting lots of random keys to wake it up. The receiver's really small, so using the extension cable to get it away from the case & other components fixed that.

Most any other wireless thing in the area may also do it. Wife tried a wireless mouse once and a wireless outdoor thermometer played hell with the cursor. Jumped all over the screen every time the temp updated. Wireless phones can do it also. The are only so many frequencies for that type of broadcast.

It's been a couple of days and I think the problem's gone. I unplugged every USB device and plugged everything back in, and two nights in a row, my computer hasn't woken up overnight. Either plugging the USB receiver/extension cable combination into another port solved the problem or moving the cable itself around worked -- another theory I have is that there might have been a short or something in the extension cable, and that may have caused the computer to wake up. Either way, everything seems fine now. I'll wait a while longer before marking this one as "solved."
