    Black Background-GoogleChrome,ControlPanel, Mozilla Thunderbird

HP Pavilion laptop running Windows 7 64 bit.
Recently when opening Google Chrome it appears with black background. I googled the issue and turned off hardware acceleration. No help. Also when opening Mozilla Thunderbird email the background is also black.
When I went into Control Panel this morning, the background is also black.

What is causing this issue and how can this be fixed?

    Some questions and suggestions first!

[1] Have you installed any new hardware, software or updates prior to this problem?
[2] Have you got a restore point prior to this problem?
[3] Run Malwarebytes [FREE] => Malwarebytes [FREE].
    [4] Run a FULL system Anti-Virus scan.
[5] Are there any new items that have appeared in the Startup tab of msconfig?

    I hope this helps!

I ran Malwarebytes and Norton Anti Virus Full Scan but the issue persists.

When I tried to run System Restore, it just hung that it was initializing so I rebooted the computer and it said it had not finished running do I wish to continue or not. I closed out.

I checked and the black background persists on everything.

How long did it run before you interupted the System Restore procedure [System Restore shouldn't take longer than an hour!]?
Did you try a restore point prior to the one mentioned above that hung?

SUGGESTION: Try running the System Restore with Norton disabled as Norton interferes with the process. Obviously disconnect from the Internet first!

    I hope this helps!

    Thanks Paul,

I think it was running about an hour. I just disabled Norton for 5 hours and disconnected from the internet.

Running the system restore again to a critical Windows update point 11/21/18.

I'll keep you updated when I return later this afternoon.

    Thank you.

    OK, fingers crossed!

If the System Restore works, you will just have to re-install any software that you installed between the date of the System Restore point and now!

You didn't answer my two questions above!

    I hope this helps!

Oh, it's my brother's computer. I didn't have a chance to ask him if he knowingly downloaded any programs or not.

I forgot to look in msconfig but since I just got here, I haven't a clue if there are any new items appearing in startup.

When System Restore finishes, I'll look in startup to see if I see anything.
