PC keep shutting down then says "NTLDR is missing"

Hi guys

This has been going on for about 3 weeks now. My PC keeps shutting down and then says "NTLDR is missing press Ctrl+Alt-Del to restart" and windows won't load. I'm not shutting down my PC on purpose - it just does it by itself.

The only way I can get Windows to start up is by pressing the off button to force a shutdown and then it restarts fine.

If I restart the pc or shut it down and then start it Windows just loads fine. But this problem of it shutting down and saying NTLDR is missing is happening more and more

I have ran virus checkers and nothing found. Speed fan shows that temps are okay.

If anyone can advice on what I should do to find the solution that would be much appreciated.

Cheers, Andrew

[1] Download and run Malwarebytes [FREE] from here => Malwarebytes.
[2] Have you got any other HDD's attached?
[3] Has the boot order been changed?

Sounds like you need to fix the pbr.

bootice should be able to do it

Click process pbr. dot Bootmgr record. Select the windows partition in the dropdown. Click Install/CFG. Click OK.

BootIce.zip

Ideally should be done from outside Windows, but usually works fine if you run it from within.

I ran Malware bytes earlier tonight, quarantined a few issues. PC shut down about 10 mins ago.

I have an external HDD attached for backups.

Boot order hasn't been altered.

Let me be clear the PC is shutting down randomly. Surely this has nothing to do with booting problems.

Hi guys

The problem is getting worse. It shut down again last night and came up with the NTLDR missing error. I forced shut down and it started up okay.
But now I cannot connect to the net and when I click on control panel or windows explorer I get "The remote procedure call failed and did not execute"

Last night I ran seagate tools for windows just before I went to bed but it didn't complete. The pc had shut down in the night time.

I cannot run any disk checker now as nothing works on the PC I just get this message "The remote procedure call failed and did not execute"

Cheers, Andrew

I appreciate your answers about fixing the "NTLDR is missing error" but shouldn't I be finding out why I keep getting unexpected shutdowns.

I have cleaned out all the just inside the machine, ran a virus checker, but can no longer run a hard disk checker.

Hi fobos8,

Does the problem still exist if you detach the external HDD and boot?

Did you try SIW's suggestion below?

PBR is the Partition Boot Record.

Read this for some further information => Partition Boot Record (PBR).
