I think Linux might be a good option for my next daily OS. I've used it since few years ago on my second computer, but didn't use it that much.
I've been missing from sevenforums for a long time as Real Life kinda got in the way, but today I've come back and wanted to know what folks were saying about W7's impending EOL and this has been the best thread so far.
I must say that I stopped reading about midway as I've decided I'm with the ladies on this one. I have a W7Pro laptop that has worked well for some years now, that I move between our Summer and Winter homes, and which I have a backup for i.e. an identical twin that sits in wait of any hardware failure. I can see here that an upgrade to W10 is cheap (free) but...why? Why should I put myself through the "upgrade" process if everything works to my satisfaction, i.e. it ain't broke, so why should I fix it? I already practice safe computing, am not in any kind of situations where someone might pick me out of a crowd i.e. to hack into me.
I expect there'll come a time in the future where I'll need to upgrade this LAPTOP machine (a Dell Latitude i7) to some new platform I can't live without, and at that time I will no doubt be forced into some brave new MS world but heck it probably won't even be called 10 at that time. And in the meantime my wife has a W10 laptop (for fun) and I have an Intel Compute Stick with W10 that I haven't even deployed yet, so my skillset won't be left completely in the dust. But my current setup is comfortable so I'm gonna stick with it.
Just joined the forum and have an old Dell D420 which runs Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit just fine and cannot update to Windows 10. I heard from a friend, that there is some European company that plans on providing updates to Windows 7 past the EOL date of January 2020. Any info on that would be much appreciated.
Thanks for listening.

Nord899,
I love your angel in a snow storm Avatar! Very creative!
If for some totally weird reason, I had to give up my fabulous Windows 7 OS, I would certainly NOT turn to Linux, Linus, Ubuntu, or some other NON-MS compatible OS. And, I don't understand the rush from Win-7 to Win-10.... totally skipping over a perfectly good OS, called Windows 8.1.
Granted, Windows 8 was not all it was cracked up to be. Many problems. Enter the fix....Windows 8.1.
As an Administrator on the OLD Windows 8 forum, I'm very much aware of all the failures expressed by the users of Win-8. But, as a retired Computer Tech, I go all the way back to DOS 2.0, and I remember all the hate and discontent involved with putting a new OS on a computer, when you don't have all the hardware drivers on disks, ready to install.
Windows 7 is famous, for not having a very detailed Driver Package. Like right here on my five year old PC.... when I install any version of Windows 7 on this PC, I have to dig out the drivers disk that came with my Gigabyte Motherboard. And, I have to install the Sound Driver, LAN Driver, and Video driver from that CD, as well as the USB 2.0 drivers.
Now, just for fun, I've installed Windows 8.1 on this machine, using a scratch HD, and I've never had to pull out the Motherboard Drivers disk to load drivers. Windows 8.1 has almost as good of a Driver Pack, as Windows 10. At least for my PC, it's 100% complete.
So, if I'm ever forced to give up Windows 7, and I can't imagine why I'd ever do that, Windows 8.1/Pro/x86 will be running on my PC. With an install of the "Classic Shell", it looks just like Windows 7 and is just as easy to use.*
* A new software group has taken over the continuing development of the "Classic Shell".
It looks like, and runs just like the Original.
Cheers Mates,
I thought about either going to either 8.1 or 2012 r2 (I have licenses as well as virtual machines for both), but I didn't like my aero customization attempt (I couldn't get it quite right), and really I don't like having to customize it at all. Also I'm not updating 7 now so why switch to 8.1 only to delay the end of support by 3 years for an OS that I'm not updating now. I figure that because of it's popularity 7 will be supported by third party software for quite a while whereas for 8.1 support won't be for as long after the cutoff date. So ultimately I decided that rather than go to 8.1 only to delay going to Linux, that I'll just go to Linux when I have to. If you aren't going to go to 10 why delay the inevitable? Either stay on 7 or switch to Linux or some other Unix derivative. Going to 8.1 will only delay going to either 10 or Linux.
I'm sticking win my Windows 7 BUILD for the foreseeable future....
cannot afford to build a new PC and I don't really like Windows 10.....
I suppose that if I had to, I could run with Windows 10, Pro, x86 or 64, and I do know how to beat it into submission, and with the added Classic Shell, make it look and act like Windows 7, but I'd just rather NOT.
As it comes from MS, it represents one HUGE security hole.
It takes a lot of work to make 10 approximate 7, which I already have running beautifully on my five year old Home Brew PC.
Cheers Mates!
