Need to get Administrator Priviledge

I have an old Windows 7 Pro 64 machine that I got for free and never really did much with it. I am setting it up for my wife to use now but I am not an administrator on it. Is there a way that I can make myself an administrator on this box?

If you've just got the computer from someone else, the very first step you must do is a clean install, which will also grant you full control over it in addition to removing anything else previously there.

I used to get many old PC's every year, from friends and customers. To avoid all the pitfalls of a clean install, like not being able to find drivers, I just do this:

One: Go into the Control Panel/Users and create a new user for yourself, with Administrator Privileges.
Two: Log in as that new user.
Three: Go back into 'Users' and delete the old user.

That will remove all the files that were private to that old user, thus removing him/her from the PC, and leaving you as the Administrator and only user.

Then do a massive cleanup on the HD, removing all old Temp files, etc. "Disk Cleanup" can go a long ways to accomplishing that little chore. Personally, I use "Win Utils" to clean up the HD and Registry.

It only takes a little while, to remove the old user and make you the new Administrator, and clean out all the old junk. And then, you've got yourself a New Computer.

If you lived close by, I'd gladly do that for you. Any decent Tech could do it.

Good Luck Mate!

On the current installation there must be at least one user set with administrator privileges. Why don't you use it?

Can you give us more information of your computer? It will help us to help you.
- Backup the SLP key from the current installation. Use Activation Backup and Restore (ABR)
3 Tools to Backup and Restore Windows 7 and Vista OEM Activation License • Raymond.CC
- Clean Install same version using any Win 7 SP1 installation disk. If the computer has 4G or less, I recommend to install Win 7 32 bits.
- Activate using the backup.
- For the updates, use simplix MS releases SP2 for Windows 7
