Was great for a few days... then came back.

Today it seems to be not as fast as normal but not as slow as it was.

Maybe there's some cache in the AMD video software that needs to be cleared, or some glitch, I can't tell.

You came here for help but you're not doing what we instruct you to do.

Once again, open WU and do a manual search for updates. Does it run forever?

I already tried that, and no it ran for a few minutes then said there were no updates because it auto-updates.

I need a way to identify the problem, I'd prefer not to try random solutions.

It's back to its slowness again... I know the fix had something to do with the video software, and I mentioned it's probably something in cache that gets something gummed up randomly, but I'd like to know where to check. I suppose I could just keep clearing every cache every few days but that seems like a workaround instead of a solution.

Is anyone familiar with troubleshooting or diagnosing video software?

I can try all the solutions here in order that I haven't yet, but I'd rather know places to check for problems (I tried Process Explorer and I'm not seeing what paths specifically to go down once I get there).

There is where your issue started!
What was changed, installed, etc. then?
Are you experiencing the same issue in Safe Mode?

I finally upgraded to Windows 10, and it's running GREAT!

I only ran into slowdown once and it didn't last long.

I think it was just a video driver issue with Windows 7. Now I'm getting automatic Dell updates and there's much more than there was before (the previous ones wouldn't install because Intel had marked them as incompatible for 7).

Now I only have to deal with Dell's nonsense! I shall figure out what the h3!! it's trying to install (no it doesn't make it easy to see) and then see how things go!

Thanks for all the help and suggestions. Sorry I didn't just jump into all of them, but I'm pretty sure I was right that it was a video driver problem with Windows 7!

The greatest fix for a Dell, is to Blow Off the Dell installed OS, and do a clean install of the OS you like, from a Generic Install disk.

That works equally well for Toshiba and HP PC's, desktop or laptop. Manufacturer installed OS's can be a real PITA, with all the tag-along software.
If I were given a brand new PC today, I'd just wipe it clean and do a clean install of my preferred OS.

I have every OS from XP to Win-10/Pro/64 on CD's, DVD's and Flash Drives. It's my hobby, now that I'm retired.

Cheers Mate!

Has Windows Update been slow/unreliable for people recently?
I recently did a reinstall of Windows 7 which has KB3177467, KB3172605, KB3125574 integrated among a few other updates. When I try to patch and bring the install up to date, it either takes a long time to search for updates, a long time to download the updates, or fails to download some of the...

BSOD on old laptop; recently changed thermal paste
Old Dell Inspiron 1545 was running temperatures above 60c causing the fan to be really loud so I decided to switch the thermal paste on the processor which brought the temperatures to 30c idle. All this was done correctly (all paste removed, pea sized MX-4 applied). Besides this, the only thing...

I am not sure what happened. It could be a windows update that may have affected my default browser's font to change to bold. The browsers that are affected are IE9 and Chrome. FF is working fine. I have checked my font's folder and it seems all my default fonts are there. I would hate to do a...

Windows Explorer and now Browsers slow / timing out
