    Hi

I think the worst thing about W10 is the MS account sign in requirement, granted its easy for Pro+ editions to by pass this option, however this is much more convulted for Home users.

I do fervantley believe this is an open door for hackers, as they mainly gain entry to a users files/folders by opening a compromised email.
Further how can a Pin login be more secure than the keyboard choice, the maths just dont add up

I just hope you don't forget the past. Walking away from the old and jumping strait to the new usually don't pan out the best. This is beyond operating systems. Let me give you a example. Especially since in your own words you said you was "old" Well this example will probably hit you before me. Back when social security was implemented you got back what you paid in. Now you wont. Many people forgot and "moved on" from it's original purpose and now many of the older folks are not getting what they paid in and some may never get any of what they paid in. In the operating system world that sort of thinking will make it a norm that we now have to remove and download a bunch of crap if we want a clean fast running machine. Eventually if we just "walk away" all the time there will be no remove and download a bunch of crap to have a clean fast running machine. They will find a way to make that impossible. Such as not allowing any 3rd party software and remove any way of turning off all the things you don't like. So we need to remember and DEMAND less of what clearly we all don't like. If enough people refuse they will never win. If we all just walk away we will end up with a bloated slow spying machine that costs us monthly. Now you may be lucky to not live long enough to see it but any offspring you may have will.

Myself once 7 is dead i will move to something not windows..... There must be a point in time a person has to draw the line and draw that line soon enough it is not to late. Now if 10 did not come with all the bloat and spying crap I'd be fine moving on.
Lance has an MCSE and he knows what he's doing. He's made 10 workable for himself. And M$ doesn't care if they lose some customers. It's already too late, and they don't give a d---. Most people don't know they're being spied upon, or don't care, since their smart-phones already do that.

They're planning on moving the next OS to the web. and selling it as a service, and the sheeple will buy it. People who don't use online forums aren't even aware of Linux, and everyone I know outside the forums tells me "I don't see any problems with Win 10. It works fine."

This thread is about making the right choice for yourself. There is no right or wrong answer.

Leaving that confrontational post I think I should clarify my position with Windows 7. I have bean running Windows 7 from its inception and I know all the in's and out's. I love the OS.. Sad to see it go. Then M$ sends us a curveball.. Windows 10.... I started with 95, 98,98SE, ME, XP and 7... I got my MCSE in 2000.. Ya I'm old and out dated but I know my way around don't be fooled. I loved Windows 7 and all the others in the past.. Time to move on..

Sorry Lance, you're right, I was being thin-skinned. My apologies.

Hope you have a great Christmas/Hanuka/Kwanzaa/Solstice, or whatever is appropriate.

There is no obvious way to set up a local account when starting W10 Home for the first time. Pro is different, there's an option to use an offline account on the first page.

But you can get that option in Home too, it just take a few more steps.

When it asks for an email or phone number for setting up the first account there is no option for an offline account. Give it a number like 1234567890. The next screen asks you to confirm the phone number, and at the bottom left of that screen is the offline account option.

And a blank password is perfectly acceptable for an offline account in Home.

Lance with a MCSE sounds more like a salesmen more worried about his own pocket then anything else. Not trying to Bash Lance but that is what it looks like but might not be true.

The point of my post is not weather or not anyone knows about other options it was don't forget the past. Don't let anyone railroad you especially not a large software company. Bad things happen when you forget the past and let people force things on you. Just because some people are ok with it the rest of us should be? Just because others will pay for online service the rest should just deal with it? NO If that was the case who gets to choose what the rest of the world has to deal with? Letting yourself conform to what other people do that know the least about something sounds pretty dumb doesn't it? Its like saying lets find the worst electrician and make his way the standard way of wiring your house. Just because the phones do so we should let it go? Naw again lets not let the phones do it either.

But you are right everyone should have a choice NOT every one must conform. We have the option to inform them folks outside the forums we have the option to walk away from windows as well. Which if enough do they will figure out they screwed up and make something for them folks. Al tho you are right for many people it will be to late they will not go back to windows. Ever since windows 10 came out people have been moving over to linux in big numbers. I honestly tried linux years ago and said i wouldn't do that again. Well now there is so many more people so many more linux options so much more support for it and so much dislike for windows 10 they are really pulling in the people. I would be fine sticking with windows if they wouldn't of put all the spying crap in there. If they want to know what i do on this computer get a warrant or ask me. Just wait one day you will have cameras in your bathrooms and bedrooms that someone watches 24/7. are you going to be ok with that to?

PS I highly doubt Lance cares what i said. Probably didn't even read it. But others will search the forums and start thinking for themselves what they really want to do and not just fallow like a sheep. I hope everyone does. I also hope everyone stands up and says no to what they don't want. Most importantly don't forget the past. Humans tend to move from good to bad or repeat the bad when they forget the past.

Yes I read your post and you made some valid points. The fact is that all of us have to educate ourselves! I don't advocate Windows 10. But the fact is that Windows 7 like all its predecessors are at the end of there life. So if you want to leave Windows all the power to ya! But Windows 10 can be tamed. Do your research and learn how. I tamed my Win 10 beast through research.. You can too. The two app I posted are very good. But you need to dig deep in to the OS in ways I will not post here.

...Linux however is not quite the same as Windows - lots of programs either don't exist for Linux or have only clones that are not that good. Office is obviously the thing that comes to mind - all those "free" Linux alternatives are not good enough. If they are, then why not use emacs (which I do for almost all my work)?
I disagree that Linux is not quite the same as Windows. Some flavors have a GUI that is similar to Windows but, under the hood, it is completely different! It makes it difficult for former Windows users to learn since they have to unlearn pretty much everything they ever knew about Windows. I know I'm struggling with setting up the machine I'm using right now with Linux Mint Cinnamon 19.2 but I'm almost there thanks to the help of people of various forums and from a dear friend who has forgotten more about Linux than I'll ever know.

I also have to disagree about the "free" Linux programs not being good enough. Many of them are good enough or are even better. They are just different and require learning how to use them. For example, LibreOffice (LO) is just as good (and, in some cases, better than MS Office but it works differently to accomplish many of the same things. In Linux, LO also has more applications in its suite than MS Office. You have to be willing to accept that you will often need to completely change your workflow to accomplish the same thing.

So far, the only programs I can't find some kind of a replacement or substitute for (paid or free) is my old, expensive, professional music notation program (I haven't used it in over a decade so no great loss), the support software for my Logitech wireless mice (there is a kludge workaround for that), and my Logitech keyboards with umpteen macro keys (I'll probably have to get rid of those and come up with a different workflow for use with more conventional keyboards).

You also may have to change some hardware (printers are notorious for being hit and miss when it comes to having Linux compatibility (fortunately for me, I've been looking into replacing my POS printer anyway so that won't be a huge problem for me).

I don't believe much of anything MS has to say anymore. I would think a PIN would be far easier to brute force than a completely random string of letters, numbers, and symbols.

If you disconnect from internet before installing you should get an option to use a local account
