(I have successfully used the same product key on more than 50 computers both laptops and tower pc's.)
Well...there is no hassle if the configurations are correct.

I have seen where if a major system hardware component isn't compatible with other hardware on the same system, or a piece of hardware isn't compatible with Windows, then Windows activation may have some issues.

There's a lot of crossed wires here

If the OEM computer is still using the factory installed product key then MS does not get involved
- it self activates

The COA sticker key is Unique and "STRICTLY" speaking MS EULA states it should only be used on the computer it was supplied with, however they have no way of knowing what/which comp that its attached to so it can be used on another OEM comp, without them finding out.
which is why it works on her comp, your not using the same key - which is what you first stated
Will NOT work on a Retail motherboard
Both of the above have 3 "lives" (slmgr/rearm)

There are certain product key types, (VLK,MAK and MSDN) that allow multiple activations
Issued to companies/colleges/developers - these were the most abused and quite a number have been blocked.

Using the same RETAIL product key, which has 5 "lives", on multiple computers at the same time is breaking the EULA, and therefor piracy certainly NOT legal, even if it works

Certain component changes are allowed, the advent of SSd's instigated this, and as i said its the PID thats altered in this case and also checked

In that case, either her comp doesn't have a retail motherboard or Microsoft authorized an illegal COA product key.

Also, Microsoft's own Windows activation says that using the same OEM COA product key on no more than 5 OEM or otherwise systems is allowed whether Windows is registered or not.

Here again, to the OP's question, yes it is possible and allowed as well as both systems being online at the same time.
