Windows 7: how to sort files on disk? (yes, really)

how to sort files on disk? (yes, really)

This sounds trivial, but it's not.
When you "sort" files in Windows Explorer, or any other file manager, it doesn't actually sort the file listing on disk, it only sorts the displayed listing.

The problem that I'm facing, is I'm maintaining a USB stick with music for my car. The car stereo does *not* sort the listing that it reads, it just plays them in the order that they come off the stick, so I have *no* control over what sequence the songs in a folder are played!!

This is *very* annoying... The only way that I've found, to control play order is to copy 1 file at a time to each folder, but with >1000 files in >100 directories, this is very unpleasant, and needs to be done *every* time I add a file to the disk, otherwise the new song is always at the end of the folder listing.

Does anyone know of a program that will actually sort the files on disk for me??

Here's a utility that claims to sort files on a flashdrive to solve the very issue you are talking about. How to Sort Music on Your Flash Drive for Your Car Stereo

I've never used it so can't comment on how well it works.

Sort files globally?
Is there anyway to sort files globally? It seems everytime I open or close a folder, it re-sorts it to another criteria from when I last set it. For instance, I'll pick "ascending" and close the folder. Then when I come back to it later, it automatically switches to "descending" on it's own. ...
