not sleeping

Lately my computer doesn't auto-sleep. The setting is for 30 minutes. This happened before but don't remember solution. Might have been power off and power back on. Don't think it was just a restart. Any ideas please? And why would it happen?

You don't want to use low power modes like sleep and hibernation because they can and will muck things up. Just shut down normally.

I've been a member of many tech sites since 2005 and have read post after post of people having low power setting issues.

Thank you for the quick reply. I've been using the sleep feature for almost 12 years and haven't had anything mucked up as a result. And i don't want to wait for the startup.

What's this "Wait for startup" BS?
If your computer is set up properly, and maintained properly you won't have to wait more than ten seconds or so, for a Startup.

I'm sorry, I've been called a Maintenance Nut, but my PC starts up in ten seconds and shuts down in Five. That doesn't just happen by accident....it requires some effort.

There have been countless complaints about both Sleep and Hibernate, since MS invented them.
I'll have no part in either of them. They are permanently shut off on all my PC's.

Like any household appliance, if I'm not using my PC, I just shut it OFF.

Good Luck

The reply from A. user in this blog provides a number of possible solutions-

My computer won't automatically go to sleep after the time I set - Microsoft Community

It says it's for Win 8 but his advice would seem applicable to any version.

Yeah, I know I didn't solve the issue, but the mere fact sleep mode isn't working anymore proves my suspicion about the power settings withen Windows mucking around. It's a great feature on the surface, but deep down it's been a source of many issues for some. If you use an SSD or NVMe drive and to make things snapper with having all task auto end within a second via a registry tweak, your computer should be able to shut down in about 5 seconds max and start in 10 to 15 seconds max. At least this is my case. I also pick and chose what is running in the background with a combination of Autoruns and a very old but still usable program called StarupCPL. I used StartupCPL way back in my XP days. I'm going to see if it'll actually work in my Windows 10 VMware install. If you chose to see what StartupCPL does, you'll find it in the control panel after installation. The download is available at MajorGeeks.

Thanks for all replies. I think you are right, shut down overnight is the best option according to some other sources. BTW, shut down fixed the not sleeping problem.

Self Sleeping
