How to do that when the stick is not read ?
When chkdsk cannot run in the Windows environment it will normally auto-schedule a pass on next reboot and run the process in a pre-boot environment. If you have a drive letter shown then you can attempt to begin the process and see what occurs, but you could always check the USB drive on a different PC.

Take the USB stick out, press one of those drive letters, then plug the stick back in ...does that work?

Nope. Seems like once the OS has decided there is a malfunction it stops looking. If I reboot, I get the error message again, otherwise, it just ignores the stick.
