This should be simple, but I have not found an answer about giving my laptop complete amnesia about nonexistent Server.

I have to switch to separated admin account but can't find a list of services to switch off in msconfig, editing group policy hasn't stopped the machine's identity crisis, and I need guidance as to do this completely, because my expertise is clearly missing a step somewhere.
I see that your site has moved away from Windows 7, but I use it on this laptop with legacy apps and under-the-hood accessibility not found in later versions.
Could some kind soul point me to a resource to divorce my unit from its previous spouse?
The computer business that rebuilt this unit to my specs could not answer my question...("...software issue, buh-bye"...)

I installed my own copy of OS, single user license. It came to me with Win 8; I created a sep. partition to install Windows 7.
Argh.

Welcome to the forum. Its not clear what the problem is is it just the name or is it trying to login to a domain you need to be specifc wha the problem is

Hi

A standard W7 Iso doesn't usually require/request a Domain server (business)--- so where did you get it!!!
(we can get you a link for an Iso)

I need to remove this ex-enterprise laptop from deceased domain controller. I'm having permission denials from old Group Policy. OS is personal retail single home user, all legit, on Windows Installation disc, Windows Ultimate 64-bit. System details logged on my profile here. I can't remove or disable the services involved, even from Administrator log-in, either through the Services interface or by taking ownership of registry keys to change values or delete. This restriction is only on settings that keep the laptop under original remote server control. I build my own pcs, am Level II tech, have never had this problem before, because never bought an old enterprise laptop which clearly had not been properly re-imaged. Have been bleeding out of my ears, because if I can't solve a computer challenge, I feel like the terrorists won. I am very appreciative of the generosity of this community. Hope this clarifies. Laptop should not control user. User should control laptop, right?

Hi

A Clean Install, (single Boot), should totally overwrite the OS, including any previous Group policies and Users.
Your situation leaves us 2 avenues to explore
The Bios is still using the old Network Domain settings and requirements ---- reset to Default
The W8 that it came with was also Domain linked

If i was you i would
Reset Bios to default
Then Clean install W7 again.... let windows manage the installation...for a Single OS install

Too bad you're in TX and I'm in FL, or I'd suggest that you bring that laptop over here, and over a cold drink I could help you solve your delema. I have everything here, in my shop, to permanently solve your problem.

You've expressed the desire to run Windows 7 on that laptop, but, if I were you, and you have the ISO, I'd install Windows 8.1/Pro/ either x86 or 64 bit. (whatever your laptop requires) 8.1 is a much better OS, with much greater hardware compatibility.
I'm running it here, on 6 laptops, of varying Brand, age, and capability. (and four desktops) It's even running great on my old Acer One Netbook. It's really time for us (all) to bid Windows 7 a fond farewell. But "NEVER 10"!!!

I'm not sure what a Level II tech is, but I'm pretty sure we'd get along well. I'm a Board-Level repair tech myself, and have been for over 40 years.
