Yeah, I've seen my fair share of shenanigans from AV software and firewalls. So you're not the only one. My personal opinion of such software is of a negative one. Thus, I don't use any of it at all and use a more unorthodox approach to help prevent a malware infection.
If you want to read a little about how I do things in what I'd call a condensed written format, then go here and here. I really need to do an instructional video or something. Doubt anyone would really care, but I could probably explain and teach it for those that are willing to learn.
It really does ultimately come down to how you use the Internet and your security hygiene. And that requires some computing knowledge as well. Many don't have those skills and simply trust some vendor to protect their computer and whatnot. I guess it's like picking car insurance or any type of insurance for that matter. So, for me I don't use "insurance" (traditional AV software). I just keep a massive pile of fictitious money on hand in the form of intellectual capital of knowledge gained and use that to safe guard my computer and whatnot.
