    Dell XPS Pro - Unable to create a rescue disc error 0x80070057


    Hi I have been unable to create a rescue disc and have received this error:

    Running Win7 Pro 64 bit on a Dell XPS desktop

    win 7 repair disc error0x80070057 parameter incorrect

    I have run scannow and found no issues also tried using a dvd and cd still same issue.

    I have seen something about Truecrypt volume but don't know what or where it would be located?

    I do not use a cloud for anything as I saw     Truecrypt volume has something to do with a cloud?

    FWIW when I bought this pc new it was a Win 8 which rolled back to Win7 if that makes any difference at that time I was able to create a rescue disc which I tried today and that did not work at all

    BTW I use Acronis 2020 do I even need a rescue disc?

    what kind of rescue disc?

    I think there is something in dell software that can create recovery discs.

    In win 7 you could create a repair disc. Which is what it seems you are trying to do.

    Probably it cant find winre.wim

    at admin cmd type:

    reagentc /info

    The repairdisc.exe in win7 creates a cd/dvd that is bios ( not uefi) bootable and contains winre.wim renamed to boot.wim.

    It has the same system recovery options as the installation media. So if you have the installation media, you dont need the repair disc.

    The official MS installation media is:

    X17-59186.iso

    OR

    en_windows_7_professional_with_sp1_x64_dvd_u_676939.iso

    And same issue.

    The iso shows id that to burn a actual Windows 7 Pr install Disc? If so I see many on the list which one ? ;-) I have Pro 64 Bit. I have Win7 Professional Home.

    If its the install disc does that have the recovery or fix portion? If it's just the OS its pretty useless to me as I do not have the drivers etx to do a fresh install. Like I mentioned my PC came w/ Win8.1 and i was able to roll back to 7. So I never had the actual disc for Win7 Hope Pro 64 bit.

    Ok so I burned the 1 win7 Pro 64 iso and then booted from it and tried the repair option and got this. See attached.

    Again since I have acronis do I even need a repair disc from windows? It would be nice to have but on the oter hand I seem to be getting nowhere. Also I do have the original Win 8.1 disc that came with the pc, I doubt that I could run the repair from it?

    1. It needs to be the same bit version as your installed windows

    2. You need to boot the media in the same mode as your windows installation. That means either bios mode or uefi mode.

    That is an intel 4th gen machine so it should support both modes. You picked the wrong mode when you booted that media.

    Does your win7 boot in bios or efi mode?

    Start tapping F12 as soon as you power on to bring up the one time boot menu, it will probably show two options

    Bios restart F12 Chose legacy boot from E burner

    Downloaded this X17-59186.iso from below will try when done and report
    Google Drive - Virus scan warning

    Scanned w/ Malwarebytes prior to test

    Tried and same error

    Yes same issue. When I first bought the PC I used Acronis to make a WINPE boot disc also I put on a WINPE usb. It does open Acornis and in there it does have a option to boot to Windows in case your pc can not. I tried that and that worked.
    My thoughts are if I do have a failure that would not let me boot to Windows I could use that and then proceed to recover a Acronis image backup.
    Also I found on my D slave drive a Win7 ( folder see pix) backup I must of made when I first got it. I tied to burn that using NERO ISO as a Boot disc and ran that same issue also . I tried to burn to a ISO w/o Nero and just using the PC but when I did nothing happened.

    It seems that the only issue is that I no longer have the option to choose repair what I only believe would fix a Windows not starting correctly. My knowledge is limited on this stuff and the more I keep on trying the more I screw up in little ways and then have to start all over again.

    What do you think is I just leave well enough alone and use Acronis image recovery in case of a failure , also I have just cloned to another HD the whole OS using acronis so I have that as sort of a double back up.

    I have a Acrons backup from 1/2022 I do not know if that would even work and if I went back that far I do not remember if it was just the OS or OS and other programs and files. If not I would have a lot in reinstalling to do.

    When I tried the UEFI what I got was a extra H drive which also added something in my C drive, the C drive pix with my fingers shown I'm not sure that it is the exact location but what was in the H drive also showed up af the front of the C drive.

    I could not remove that H drive so I had to delete it using Ease uS when I did I got the unallocated box in the C drive.


    Again this is from memory and my friend its not that good to start with as well as mentioned Im not all the PC savvy

    Please look at my C drive, at the top there is a small folder named a: (last two photos) I never remember seeing it in the past

    I opened it and took a pix, I do not know what it is? Could if be remnants from Win10? This PC was seit out for repait by Square Trade for a supposed bad mobo and when I got it back they had installed Win 10. I used Acronis to bring it back to Win7.

    Perhaps this has something to do with what is going on?

    disk management shows you are efi booting as you can tell from the efi system partition you are pointing at

    H you are pointing at is very small when you look very closely you can see it shows as 39.9mb, not clear what that is. It seems to show in your disk management pic as disk0 partition2 40mb fat formatted.

    I assume the top picture is the installation media.

    Is the "a" folder in the Acronis image ? The contents of the "a" folder look they have something to do with a chromium based browser.

    No no that "a" is my actual C hard drive, i believe that does not belong in there. I wonder if I can remove that and then try again?

    I went and opened up the Acronis backup from 1/2022 and looked at the C: drive and yes it had the "a" in that. So I guess it belongs. I do not know if I should chance doing a restore from 1/2022, would you think it could clear this mess up?

    That efi was from a day or so ago and I really do not remember

    Your hard disk 0 is divided into partitions. One of those partitions has been allocated the letter C.

    "a" is a folder on partition C

    The stuff inside the "a" folder looks like it is connected to a chromium based internet browser.
