For no apparent reason my computer won't shut down. I have not changed anything for months and two days ago it started this behavior. I can't figure this out. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks up front.

There’s a bug that was discovered in 2020 that causes windows 7 to not shut down, try doing a system restore and restore your pc to the point before the issue started happening
If it isn't some update bug, then I'd try a selective startup with msconfig. If that works you'll have to iron out what the culprit is with the Autoruns program.

In spite of all the help, so far everything I've tried has been unsuccessful. I'll have to go with the msconfig solution, but I might have to wait a few days before I do it. I have some work to finish first. For the moment, I'm just using "sleep" mode. Thanks once again to all.

I'd really refrain from using those low power modes of sleep and hibernation. They can and will cause issues. Maybe not for everyone, but I've been on tech forms long enough to know it's been an issue. You always want to fully power off and on. I never leave my computer on anyway. When I'm done I turn it off. Complete waste of energy and wear and tear on my components. Plus dust culmination.
In your case you should be able to just press and hold the power button and the computer will force shutdown. Unless ACPI (power options) in Windows was set not to respond to a long power button press. In which case, go into your power options in the Windows Control Panel and change your settings according.
Speaking of the power options. This could also be a source of issues. Resetting things to default or just changing one setting can bring things back to normal.
You're right, leaving the computer on all the time is wasteful and risky. I shall try changing some power options. Thanks.
