    Control Panel>User Accounts>Manage Another Account

Could be update agent like with the old XP ASP user account (DELETE!) that would bring back the vanquished log-on screen.

Well WUD has to have a way to get past log-in screens so that is prob the way in Win7.

    Where did you find that?

"Account Unknown" is entries from another OS, either from a previous that was updated, or if you are dual-booting.

When you go to Control Panel>User Accounts>Manage Another Account link, are those unknown accounts visible? If so, simply click on them one at a time and in the window that opens select "Delete the account".

These accounts are a left over from another OS and will appear on the permissions for folders (and files) unless they are explicitly removed from the Folders and files

If you trace the root folder for these accounts and remove all permissions from the user they will be removed and due to permission cascading will disappear from the whole tree they are on.

Another way to handle this on a data drives is to set the permissions on the root of the drives as you wish and then use the advanced permissions dialogue to force all folders under the root to use the same permissions

There is a check box for this very purpose
