This can happen if you have installed a program that is not aero compatible. I have had this happen with Trillian.

A common cause is when you are attempting to run a program or game which doesn't support 32 bit colour, and forces Windows to drop back to 16 bit colour, which in turn causes Windows Aero to close to prevent a system-wide crash.
start > run >
just restart the desktop window session manager services
if its firefox, its a bug.
I noticed that it happened to me whenever Winsat.exe started running. Winsat is the processes with monitors system performance and gives you the WEI score. You can either terminate the process or go through some steps to keep it from running again.
To disable the task:
1. Run taskschd.msc
2. Navigate to "Task Scheduler Library->Microsoft->Windows->Maintenance"
3. Select the task named WinSAT
4. right-click and disable it.
If citrix plugin or anything citrix related is installed on your pc, it is a known cause as well to cause this issue.
