Is anyone still using Windows 7?
-
I'll need to get a working repair disk in that case then as I do not seem to be able to boot any of these old Win 7 drives.
Spent all morning polishing scratches out of an old repair disk and still cannot resurrect the drive in a different machine to what it was in originally. Having a nightmare.

I think I built a test iso using Simplix a couple of years ago with everything I needed. Only issue is I cannot remember where I saved it.
I seem to recall Simplix and I think that meant I could install all the correct drivers for my system as an AIO package?
You can create up-to-date Windows 7 install media by making use of this thread:

Thanks but half my problem is I cannot locate my original Win 7 SP1 installation media. I have the odd iso which might be a copy of the original media but I haven't labelled it correctly and called it Test.iso!!!! That could be test iso for Windows 10 Clean Install or maybe Win 7 ultimate. I've no idea and also no idea how to find out. I mounted it but the file and folder structure tell me nothing.

Thanks flavallee
I have managed to find a Win 7 Pro iso and have copied the SIW2 zip to C drive and extracted ISO to my OneDrive. So far so good. Hopefully, I don't end up writing anything to the drive I am working on as I haven't got a backup and it's a critical Win 10 drive!!!

Thanks for all your help, folks.
I am still stumped.
Managed to get a Win 7 Repair USB made using SIW2 excellent tutorial.
Scoured the internet last night and found instructions (that seemed a bit dodgy but I tried it anyway to no avail).
dism.exe /image:C:\sources \cleanup-image \revertpendingactions
Prior to this, system repair is in a boot loop.
Tried loading iastor drivers as cannot see any of the hard drives in system recovery when doing system repair so cannot select it.
So frustrating.
I'll read these latest posts but I cannot see what can change. The file structure seems sound on these drives.
I've ran sfc /scannow and all seems well on those I could access via CMD and using diskpart to remove or assign drive letters where necessary.
I see these responses are regarding my drives with Win 10 on. I think they will be OK but will pop back if not.

Yes. Windows 10 is awful. Windows 11 is even worse

Would you mind telling me why you extracted the ISO? Couldn't you just used Rufus to created a bootable flash drive using that ISO?

Yes. About a year ago, I received a hand-me-down PC that was choking on Windows 10. With the help of the HP Restore Partition, an SSD I that didn't get used for what I bought it for, an "emergency spare" PSU I wasn't using for anything, and a hand-me-down Beefy GPU™, I turned it into an "offline" (blocked from the Internet but able to use Windows File Sharing locally for convenience) Windows 7 "games console, except not a console" full of mostly GOG.com games. (There are a few others, like the copies of Age of Empires and Age of Empires 2 that I spent many an afternoon losing at as a kid.)
With the help of some KVM switches (and Barrier as an alternative), it shares the monitors, keyboard, and mouse of my big, triple-head, Ryzen-based Linux daily driver with a growing collection of old thin clients that I run stuff like Windows 98SE, Windows XP pretending harder than usual to be Windows 98SE, and MS-DOS on.

Yes, I am still using Windows 7 Pro on all my machines at home and even on my VPS too (I have there Apache with website, TS3 server, Sven Co-op server, OTTD server, and I can still run MC server if we want play with friends ) .
Only on my PC I have dual boot with Windows 10 for VR games and new games were not support Windows 7 anymore.
But Windows 7 is still the most stable operation system ever for real work. I still streaming on it with OBS on Youtube, editing videos in MAGIX Vegas 15 PRO , and etc. .
