Windows Explorer Putting White Check Marks Next To Each File

I opened a folder I've opened many times before. It shows the VLC symbol next to wav files which is OK. But now it's put a white check next to every other file in that folder. All of these other files are mp3 files (see screenshot). This suddenly happened tonight. The same thing has happened to a second folder with audio files. What is this from and how do I undo this?

If you'd note in your screenshot the only files with the checkboxes are mp3 files. The file type association is messed up for mp3 files. You can change it back to vlc using default programs or the vlc settings.

Thank you townsbg. You solved the problem. Somehow the Control Panel -> Default indeed got messed up. I changed it back to VLC and now Explorer is showing the VLC symbol.

And just for future reference, I have used Default Programs Editor for stuff that just wouldn't set to my default program wishes. Default Programs Editor
