Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown - but it didn't.

For the past two days every time I boot up my computer it says: Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown... but it shut down perfectly fine! I don't know why I'm suddenly getting this - I've made absolutely no changes to settings, hardware or software. I never had this issue and never had any issue with my computer before. It says the problem is BlueScreen.

(I know W7 is obsolete, I know W7 is no longer supported, I know it's best to upgrade but I am requesting help for W7 - any help is appreciated.)

It might be because your HDD or SSD is old. I experienced it on secondary desktop I use. I couldn't find the cause so I tried to re-install Windows and it refuses because "the disk may fail soon". I had to buy new SSD.

    Hey!
Sorry to hear that. Since you haven't made any changes, it's weird. Here are a few things to try:

    • Check your computer's temperature. Is it overheating?
    • Run a System File Checker (SFC) scan to fix any corrupted system files: sfc /scannow in Command Prompt (as admin).
    • Try a memory test to rule out RAM issues.
    • Check for BIOS updates on your motherboard manufacturer's website.

So after the instance I posted above, the computer was turned on and after the manufacturer splash screen I got BSOD but after a few seconds it started up on its own. The next day same thing except it went back to the splash screen and back to BSOD over and over so I did a forced shutdown with the power button.. I couldn't turn it on. I did a pre-installed diagnostics test (which does nothing but this isn't my forte) and after it completed after 4 hrs. the computer turned on. I kept it on for days (hibernate instead of shut down) because I was afraid to shut down but eventually I did and it's been fine ever since until today. I turned it on, BSOD for a few seconds and then it booted up. I was prepared to switch to SSD but the tests I did (WD dashboard S.M.A.R.T extended & CrystalDiskInfo) say the hard drive is good or normal. (I'm happy to switch but not if that isn't the issue.). The temp seems to be around 35-40.

I did notice that for almost every shutdown it says task host is running.. it eventually shuts down. I completely forgot that after the actual BSOD I accidentally posted a new thread.. booted up to BSOD after computer logo

I've tried to get help from Bleeping Computer but it came to nothing. I'm still not sure if it IS the drive or windows because there seem to suddenly be a lot of errors and I never had BSOD before this week.

I appreciate all the suggestions. I did numerous chkdsk I did sfc scannow, I did tests on the hard drive, I tried to fix a few errors with conflicting programs or programs that were trying to run even though disabled etc. Forgot to run memory test but now I'm afraid to shut down so skipping it for now.

Still happening two out of every 5 times I boot I get BSOD.. I've been told my logs show no sign of any problem with my anti-virus, my drivers, my hard drive etc. I don't know what is suddenly happening when the computer works perfectly in every other way (and though it's not super fast, it does shut down normally).
