DISM command finds a missing KB package?

    .

Hello folks, It has been quite a few months since I logged into my win 7 Dell Precision M-50 laptop. Just out of curiosity, I tried a list DISM commands in DOS admin (dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth), when completed I accessed the log file and it mentioned an error (2 missing files. package 58 as 6.1.1.0.mum & package 58 as 6.1.1.0.cat, with a reference of KB3046049 CBS catalog.

My questions first, I have a list of file error fixes (a 6 step version for win 10 but am unsure (since a medical issue) if I can use the same checklist for my old win 7 laptop). I do not recall if I ever had the DOS command set when I was using that laptop. The steps are:

    1. admin command prompt.
    2. sfc /scannow.
    3. dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth.
    4. dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth (this command does not run).
    5. sfc /scannow.
    6. chkdsk /scan

    I would like to know:

    1. Is this a working tool for my older win7 laptop to help keep my files in line?
    2. I am thinking the two files (package 58 of KB3046049) are needed to correctly complete step 3 (no errors) & 4 (allowing it to run successfully)

It has been quite a while since relying on this laptop (it has quite a few files/programs that I cannot get along without) and I cannot quite remember some things I learned since a few mini-strokes I have experienced.

?? I would like to not relearn win 7 OS, just every once in a while use the laptop and keep it 'relatively' clean of os errors. Can someone tell me this little tool I use in win 10 (ie if the DOS commands work as above within win 7)?

?? Can someone can direct me to that KB number (KB3046049), I tried to find it but could not. I figure IF I can get that KB, I can install it and it'll not error step 3 above (and allow step 4 to run).

Thank you, for answering the above two questions! Have a Blessed Day!

    Hi

DISM as such was not the W7 repair tool, you have to use KB947821.. Sysytem Update Readiness tool aka SURT
it does not generally install missing cat/mum elements

on my upto date W7 Pro that update is neither installed or offered.. could be different on your Ult

you could in theory uninstall it... WindowsUpdate>>>Installed updates....uninstall
then run an update check see if its offered

If you want to repair it, shootover to Sysnative they have a tool to do this

    :) Hello TW

Thanks for the input, a few questions?

I'll check if SURT KB947821 in my win updates installed or not. If it is installed, is there a way to repair it without uninstalling it OR is that KB available for download (assuming it can install) and I can try to install it over existing (again, if it is installed already).

Sysnative, that tool, is it a tool that would replace those elements if they are missing and if they are needed?

Thanks for the help, I appreciate it.

Oh, BTW, is KB3046049 available for download at Microsoft? That KB is not installed on this machine in CP programs & features, I checked.

KB947821, can be listed as installed BUT its a hybrid
You can run it as many times as you like, requires re-downloading tho

Sysnatives tool is used to install missing cat/mum files, they have a vast catalogue of them especially for situations like this

um confussed your saying its not installed but quoting missing cat/mum entries

kb3046049 is available from the MS catalogue W7 Server edition,

    Hi TW,

KB947821 is not listed in Control Panel programs/features if it should show in Control Panel programs & features installed updates. I used the DISM /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth in an admin DOS window, results in the win logs CBS folder (first post) that found the missing cat & mum files. That's where I guess the SURT (KB947821) you referenced was where your confused?

"SUR" is mentioned in the Logs / CBS folder as 'checkSUR.log', that log is where the missing KB3046049 & cat/mum files were where I referenced.

I went to the MS Catalog and looked up KB3046049, the 6 listings (various file sizes) mentioned, only 4 are not marked as 64 bit (my Ult. is 32 bit) BUT the OS's aren't win 7. Will any of these 4 work in 7 Ult., or will they fail upon trying to install (OS prerequisite)? I might have to find that 'Sysnative' to get those two files then (.cat & .mum)??

I should have mentioned I am running the 7 Ult. in 32 Bit mode (Older Dell Laptop).

Appreciate the help, I wished MS made these things easier but that wish was dumped many years ago (a few upgrades over old without wiping HD and starting fresh). THANKS again!

*EDIT* Found the SURT KB, am at a loss how to DL the file, it is listed in two columns on right side (at link "https://catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB947821&scol=Products&sdir=asc" after trying to DL the latest dated for win 7 WITH many listed filenames(?), and without a download button (only a copy button). Egads!

    Kb947821 latest STANDARD W7, X86 ie 32bit version, is dated early 2014
3rd entry down on the catalogue download site
and ONLY shows in update history.... not (PERMANENTALY) installed
DISM MIGHT have called and run it... thats where the Chksur log comes from
(c/windows/logs....cbs/cbspersist/checksur.....the DISM log is a seperate entity)

    Hello TW

OK, I got BOTH versions (32bit) because the one you spoke of (May 2014) was updated by the Oct 2014 version (a note in information online said it fixed something). If that KB was updated by the Oct 2014 version, should I still go with the May version or go ahead and install the Oct version (latest)?

About what you said about re-running it, can I keep the file on my second HDD and just move it to C drive and when needed, re-run it (or is there something that 'erases it' after it runs.

This should close out the fix for the laptop, if it does I'll tag this post as solved (am hoping the issue will 'go away' after running it).

    Thanks for the help!

OK, installed (TRIED) both KB947821 SURT .exe's downloaded from MS catalog page (32bit versions) and although they both run, the missing 2 file errors still shows/comes up.

Can I try installing KB3046049 'Server edition' in the MS catalog download page? Will it (if downloaded/installed) crap the OS, or will it reject on install since my OS isn't the 'server edition'?

Finally, I have made a 'restore point' before trying the two
KB947821 SURT (one May 2014and the Oct 2014). If there is a problem with the 7 server edition of KB3046049 will the restore point remove the server edition?

    Thanks for any input!

Hello SIW2, Thank you for your reply, I checked the link "Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3046049)" will this work with Win 7 32bit?
