    vanished quick launch bar??

    hi all ,

I have just taken delivery of a Dell studio complete with Windows 7.

When I set the laptop up yesterday, the desktop featured a " quick launch" type bar/block at the top of the screen that allowed me to allocated the programs etc ( music, e mail etc etc ) into it.

booted up the laptop since last night and the bar has vanished along with the Napster links etc ( free napster with Dell offer) .

I have right clicked the desktop element and it is showing all items to be shown.

Only 12 hours into W7 and I'm losing things already !

any suggestions what I may have done wrong?

Yeah. You probably didn't have a clean shutdown. Windows needs that to keep the quick launch upon first setting it. So...set it and then immediately reboot. Problem will not happen again.

Except the bar to which the OP is referring is not a part of Windows. It's likely a Dell add-on program for which only Dell can offer support.

Has the bar perhaps not been minimized or perhaps disabled?

dont think it has, I have tried to look for minimized or closed items but nothing showing. I didnt consider it being a dell item.

It looks like the launch bar at the top of a vista screen ( well the ones I have seen ) and now its ...well...gone !

it was a significant size, and was horizontal across the top centre of the screen. Contained icons for media player , music, photos, recycle bin ,napster etc.

Odd thing is, I was using napster last night from this ( get a bunch of free downloads as well as the streaming ) and now napster does not exist anywhere either.

They have removed the traditional quick launch from W7, which I found extremely upsetting, since I used it constantly.

The feature you're talking about does indeed sound like a Dell add on, but you can actually restore the quick launch toolbar the way it used to be in XP and Vista.

I did this last night and it worked like a charm. Hopefully it will solve your problem. :)

sorted , It's an item called Dell Dock . And it's part of the shipment . How did I find it .....?

had to ring Dell and moan about the CD player sounding like it has spanners in it !

great start to a new laptop!

new drive being fitted Monday and the Dock thing up and running again.

thanks for your advice and time folks, no doubt I will be back for more !:)

I think the Dell dock is licensed from Stardock so you may find that add-ons and themes etc. for ObjectDock may work with the Dell offering :)
