When you plug the drive in, does Windows make the "dum-dum" sound (new hardware found)?
It takes quite a while before a low doodle-dum sound comes thru, but it was not the same sound as when "new hardware found" sounds! it makes the sound when "unknown device" appears in the device manager, when I unplug it sounds de-dum just like when you unplug other usb!

    is this significant?

Your 500 GB external hard drive connects how - usb or firewire?
Connect the drive to any working computer that supports the interface.
For data recovery I have used testdisk it was very effective

    TestDisk Download - CGSecurity

Susan, as I suspected. The Handy Drive was damaged in the fall.

Is the data important enough to go to a recovery company?

The data is important but I backed up more than I realised so I have not lost as much as first thought.

Being a 500GB harddrive almost 3/4 full, even if it were possible, I imagine it would cost a vast amoiunt to try and restore.

    Hi Susan,

Did you try removing the drive from the enclosure? There should be a standard 3.5 or 2.5 HDD in there, either IDE or SATA.
