Urgent!! Help needed to recover lost data

URGENT HELP NEEDED TO RECOVER LOST DATA!!
PLEASE!! can anyone recommend the best data recovery software to help me out of a desperate situation.
I have a 500GB external hard drive which stopped working shortly after I did a clean installation of windows 7. The power light comes on and message appears “found new hardware - looking for drivers” but no drivers are found.
I have been told by tech support that I do not need drivers for it and there must be another problem with it and to get in touch with reseller to claim warranty.
This I have done and they will refund my money if I return the hard drive.
However my main concern is recovery of the data. I really do not want to send it away for recovery because of the private nature of the data. If I have to then I will have to.
So is there any software that I can try (I am willing to pay whatever) to recover the data, bearing in mind my computer is not recognising the hardware?

I have used Stellar Phoenix with success several times before, and it is reasonably priced. Never used it to recover an external drive though. You can download a free trail that will show you what data the software can find(but not recover) before you buy, Partition Recovery Software - Windows Data Recovery for lost partition

    Active@ File Recovery

As manager of an IT support team, I have used this successfully on many occasions for clients and internal company data recovery Active@ File Recovery. The latest version boots from USB and CD and its quite cheap.

Best of all the demo will tell you if recovery is possible and will let you recover some of your files. I 100% recommend this product.

    Hi SusanHC

Have you try removing HD from External case, & install as slave on your PC.

Has the drive ever worked in 7? Did you try another PC? I guess I'm asking are you sure the drive is bad?

Go to Best Buy (if your in the US) buy an external enclosure, swap your drive recover data, return enclosure to Best Buy. I'm sure the Best Buy guy would help you if you bring your external drive with you. They love that **** and it will take him 10 minutes. Maybe you will be in a commercial. Maybe give the guy 10 bucks you'll be his hero.

Plug the drive into a PC at the store make sure its working. I'm guessing the hard drive is fine.
