Finally Got Win7, Some Basic Options Seem To Be Missing

Sidebar - I dislike the new widget function, primarily the "Always on top" feature. I liked having the whole sidebar "block" windows from expanding over it. Win7 seems to allow the widgets to stay on top with any window underneath it. Any way to get back to the old style where widgets had a home?

Notification area - Why would MS change the direction of the arrow? I'd like the icons to expand within the taskbar when unhidden. Any way to revert?

Multi-Monitor Taskbar - UltraMon's smart taskbar doesn't seem to work any more, any other options? (you would think they would include this inside Windows at this point)

Quick launch - I understand why they got rid of it (so as to avoid confusion as to which programs are open and which are in quick launch) but I've already added text back to my taskbar. Any way to get quick launch back?

    Thanks for the (future) help

We traded the unstable sidebar for fully stable gadgets which are each independent to themself. Haven't even hiccupped in a year here.

The notification arrow is now a cue where icons wait to be added or not.

Quick launch is replaced by Pin to Taskbar, which gives you preview thumbnails of open windows and complete history at rightclick.

Maybe some one will post here,,,as I have forgot the name of the app.

There is a software that will mark off a certain part of the desktop to not be used by windows, (ie. like the Vista sidebar would stay on top and lock off that side of the screen so full screen windows would not go over that area)

I wish I could remember the name of the software.

But, I never had problems with Gadgets in Vista either. I have 4 main ones, and they all work just fine in 7 and vista.

Here's a tutorial for the Quick Launch, good luck with it:

Quick Launch - Enable or Disable

Also, it makes no sense to me why we can't have the Quick Launch along with the Superbar. I can put four QL icons where two Pinned Prgms exist... it just takes up too much real estate imo. I really have no use for pinning programs to the Taskbar. Having both the Quick Launch and the pinned programs should be able to coexist, but MSFT did their way.

on a side note, how can I disable startup programs like Windows Live Messenger that don't appear in msconfig?
    In the program's Preferences.

ya but the programs settings affect a windows setting somewhere. msconfig was great back in the day, but only about half of programs use it for startup anymore (unless im not seeing something) Id like to see EVERYTHING thats starting with the OS, including programs running in the background

For the notification entries, go to Control panel > Notification Area icons and choose only show notification for all entries then check the box that states always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar.

    And in msconfig, uncheck Sidebar,exe.

Be very careful with this purogar:
    Autoruns for Windows v9.57

By Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell

Download Autoruns and Autorunsc (581 KB)
    Introduction

This utility, which has the most comprehensive knowledge of auto-starting locations of any startup monitor, shows you what programs are configured to run during system bootup or login, and shows you the entries in the order Windows processes them.

These programs include ones in your startup folder, Run, RunOnce, and other Registry keys. You can configure Autoruns to show other locations, including Explorer shell extensions, toolbars, browser helper objects, Winlogon notifications, auto-start services, and much more. Autoruns goes way beyond the MSConfig utility bundled with Windows Me and XP.

Autoruns' Hide Signed Microsoft Entries option helps you to zoom in on third-party auto-starting images that have been added to your system and it has support for looking at the auto-starting images configured for other accounts configured on a system. Also included in the download package is a command-line equivalent that can output in CSV format, Autorunsc.
You'll probably be surprised at how many executables are launched automatically!

I'm familiar with this, I just think that the icons opening upward is sloppy and pointless. MS changes too many random things just for the sake of difference with every new OS.

Downloaded Autoruns, this is exactly what I was looking for. TY

Shame this forum doesn't have a thank or high five option. Either way, thanks to everyone for all the great tips so far.
