    I buy 10 pack licenses for 149.99 - you can't get anti-virus protection these days for 15 $ per computer ..
    Au contraire

You'll find many of the experts around here consider the free AV solutions superior in every way.

After doing 100+ installs of Avast free home with no viruses or issues, it is hard to seriously consider a bloaty paid solution which is approached as an infection to remove, and even requires a special removal tool like malware.
Superior until you have to remove a infection , so with your 100 + installs now many infections have you had ? Sorry but for the business I can not afford to have ANY infections .. Everyone to him or herself but I feel comfortable using the Norton 2010 anti-virus / spyware programs .. Bloaty - is that even a word ?? Maybe Bloated ??

    Zero infections. Zero issues.

That's what I tried to acknowledge earlier by editing my post:

Maybe business can't get cheaper, but personal users can.
It dawned on me that businesses can't use free solutions AFAIK. Sorry

Businesses shouldn't depend on free AV products. Businesses "need" centralized AV products which can be controlled and updated by the IT staff.

I look after 30 computers and I have them running like a well oiled machine now , all are limited access and I can see what every computer is trying to access . Stop problems before they happen ..

I second this quote. No matter how small.

Are you trying to recover files from the same hard drive that your OS resides on?

I had used Norton a few years back and did dump it because of the heavy load on the system. However I Beta tested Norton Internet Security 2010 and it is indeed a decent solution with a very small footprint and at least in Arizona I can pickup Norton for less than $20 and NIS 2010 also has more to offer than just protection. My father was using AVG and was swearing by it until his computer got infected bad. Spent hour trying to clean it out. Better to spend a few bucks for the piece of mind and security to handle the more sophistocated malware and crap that is out there.

All this talk of Anti-virus programs, and how vital they are (and this thread clearly shows that), yet i don't run a real-time AV scanner, am i being stupid here? Because, i have never caught a serious infection, i just take basic steps to avoid it, like:
    - A big hosts file
    - Use a limited user account with UAC turned to paranoid
    - Autorun off for all drives/devices etc...
    - Before opening any executable file, or file that could harm my computer with admin rights, i use FileAlyzer to generate its md5/sha1 hash and search for it on www.virustotal.com. Example of what i found in my friends computer:
    Virustotal. MD5: aae219d4e703051d60351f73ca288d1d
    - Use common sense, a 54kb .exe file with no icon is not to be trusted
    - Avoid all "cracks" and "keygens", if i need one i run it in a virtualbox.
    - USE LINUX FOR DAILY WORK/INTERNET BROWSING, and go to Windows when games don't run properly in Wine .
I scan my computer once every 2-3 months with several AV's (KAV, Avast, Malwarebytes, Spybot-S&D, ), and it never finds anything other than some cookies and "possibly unwanted" apps.

I've always felt anti-virus products just slow your computer down so much and get in the way with updates and messages and this and that, and some are so heavily tied-up in the OS that if the AV fails the whole OS fails as well(same goes with firewalls!).

So my question is, is this good enough, or will i burn myself on it one day like the thread starter?

    Edit: Happy new year everyone!
