annoyances

when registering for this forum i was asked for my sys info. can you see that? perhaps newbies like me assume that you can?

new win7 64 system. in 4 hours of use, win explorer has crashed 4 times...any known issues?

also, after a few hrs the mouse pointer went to "background process operating" (my terminology) and has stayed there since. a minor annoyance but it implies a process running that shouldn't be. i've changed schemes and...well, that's about all i could think to do. running processes don't suggest anything weird. any way to reset the system vsv mouse pointers?

dell studio 15
I7 Q720 1.6GHz
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570
4Gb
Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit(soon to be XP Pro if this keeps up--i can't yet even figure out how to use win live mail!)

Hi Bkwin7, Welcome to SF,

You could check the Event Viewer and see whether any Errors are listed there

Go To Start Under start search Type eventvwr under there Windows Log under that Application and right side panel check for Errors

You need to download Live Mail from MS; it will soon show up in Windows Updates as Windows Live Essentials.

Did you do a clean install by booting from the Win7 DVD? Were all of the drivers provided or did you have to provide some, or change ones which the installer provided?

Check the device manager for any drivers that are still missing or in error state.

Can you identify that the Explorer crashes started after any particular driver or Update was installed? Sometimes Updates can cause this, so need to be rolled back or uninstalled to determine which.

After checking the Event Viewer for repeat Errors to resolve, I would consider a Repair Install which keeps everything in place but reinstalls the OS. However this can also carry forward corruption, so ultimately you may need to clean reinstall to rule out bad install as the cause.

i have not checked the event log but will. this is the oem installation. my 1st experience with 64 bit...when i'm sure all apps work i will do a clean install. i was under the impression that win live extras were just that...extras. apparently dell installs them all by default. buggerers! i downloaded and (re)installed the mail app anyway. when i open it, instead of a setup routine, i get a "Windows Live Hotmail was not able to sign in to your account at this time. Please try again later." message. help says this happens but after 4 hours look for help. it's been more than 4 hours.

What do you mean by OEM installation: Was this an Upgrade kit provided by Dell?

If so, did you boot from the DVD to clean install or do an in-place Upgrade from Vista?

In-place Upgrades can carry over corruption from Vista. Clean install is usually better.

Are you saying it is an OEM retail version which you bought at a store?

Any chance Dell provided you with a clean copy DVD of Win7?

They previously did this with the OS so tech enthusiasts could clean reinstall to overcome bloatware (my specialty).

For example, my roommate got an Acer with Vista which bluescreened until I used my Vista DVD to clean reinstall for him. Solved it. Then we got his Upgrade kit in the mail with clean copy DVD of Win7 so we clean installed that.

Two annoyances
It's a new system and I'm still getting used to it but two things bug the devil out of me...first, I hate these over-sized icons. They use up maybe three times as much real estate as the icons in Xp. Is there anyway to make them smaller or swap them out? Second, I hate the gadget at the top...
