administrator problem

OK this is the problem:

I have 2 accounts on my computer, one has admin privilages and one is a regular account. I used regedit to hide the administrator account on the log in screen. But in order to un hide the admin account you have to use regedit again, but in order to change anything in the registry you have to be an administrator. I have also tried un hiding the secret admin account on windows 7 but in order to do that, you need to be and administrator.

Does any one have any ideas I could try, that would be really helpful, Thanks

I also know both passwords to the accounts...

You should be able to do this through a command prompt.

Go to a command prompt as the administrator.
  • type cmd in the search box and then right click when it is found and select Run as Administrator
  • Type Net User Administrator /active:yes

Hello angusm9, and welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

There was a workaround in Vista, here is a link to the tutorial: Solved User Account Password - Change from Win RE - Vista Forums

You will need to boot to your 7 Install DVD and open the command prompt, like is done in this tutorial: MBR - Restore Windows 7 Master Boot Record

Then type in the commands from the Vista tutorial, and when you reboot, you can enable the Default, built-in Administrator account and restore your hidden admin account.

I verified this on the laptop I am using now, so I know it works. Let us know if you have any difficulties?

Cheers!
Robert

Can you burn a CD? Use the "Create a System Repair Disk" to burn a repair disk that you can boot to instead of the DVD.
