First, "Welcome to the Seven Forums"
Take a ride through the Tutorial Section of the forums; you can usually find just about anything you need in there. It is probably the best data base of information on Win 7 on the Net. Good luck.

Here is a link to making a backup of your system (this is found in the tutorial section).

Vendors are not allowed to sell keys without disks under the Microsoft product license agreement, so where did you buy this copy from please?

I suspect you won't get a great deal of help when there's any possibility that you're perhaps using a clandestine implementation of Windows7, so if you were to announce how you found yourself in this situation it'd help your own cause :)

Do you still have the download file (probably an .ISO) that you made from Digital River? That would be your disk. Use a program like MagicISO, PowerISO, UltraISO or Nero to burn that image to disk...

If you were to get a virus (or any other reason) and need to install again, you could take your disk and do that, then type in the same Activation Key. It would not be a problem. You could not do that on a different machine. It has also been reported that if you change a major part of your computer (motherboard), Windows would think it was a new machine and not activate. You would have to call MS, tell them what happened and have them give you a new Activation Key.

I just bought an HP laptop for my father for the holidays. it didn't come with a single CD. There is a utility to recreate "recovery discs", but those put the machine back exactly the way it was from the factory. There is no disk which one can use to simply reinstall Windows 7 back on this machine.

Do these recovery utilities count under that Microsoft product license agreement?

I think you already realise that OEM distributions are differently licensed...

You could take the issue up with Hewlett Packard if you wish though...

Retail/upgrade disks have a license agreement which states very clearly that no sales of validation keys alone are permitted by Microsoft, and I know this policy is being rigourously enforced by Microsofts VeRO program on eBay at the moment...

If you used the Digital River student download then burn the ISO to DVD using ImgBurn at 4x with Verify - never fails. It also makes copies.

If you only downloaded files, then use this to make an ISO to burn to DVD: Make bootable iso from student d/l

The license is retail so it can migrate to whatever machine you want as long as it is only on one machine at a time. Safeguard the key; any Win7 installer for your version will work.

Absolutely, they will normally auto-activate without user doing anything. They are the same exact factory image which was first activated to the stickered license.

But you're better off shrugging off the factory bloatware by reinstalling using a clean copy of Win7 DVD. It also will activate with the stickered license, but requires a call to MS to parse the batch key. You can audit the exact key from your system now using Attachment 44411

If you have the RTM, you can unlock all versions by removing the ei.cfg file in Sources, then recompile using this: Bootable ISO - Create from Installation Files

Then save a Win7 backup image externally and you never have to reinstall again.
