    Regedit problem

Hi, i have changed something in regedit to try to shutdown quicker, i know i changed a value from 0 to 1, (or the other way round, i can't remember).

My problem is now my machine takes over 2 mins to shutdown, whereas before it was like 20 seconds, i know i shouldn't have changed anything but can't find or remember what it was.

I have looked at the 'wait to kill service', but that was changed from 20000 to 7000, so can't be that as what i changed only had the option from 0 to 1, or vice versa.

Hope this makes sense and any help is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Don't tinker with the registry without making a backup or without knowing exactly what you're doing. If you can't even name the value and key affected I'm afraid it's unlikely anyone else will know what on earth you've altered...

Suggest you open Regedit afresh; very often it 'remembers' the last key you were examining and will open to the same location automatically - but other than this I'm afraid your canoe has lost its paddle...

Did you type regedit in the command box in Start menu when you changed the value? If so, and you have not further go into the registry and changed other settings, via same way, chances are you might be able to re-visit the same location in the registry, when re-typing regedit and pressing enter.

Ye i did type regedit from the start menu, however i have since visited the regedit and 'collapsed' the edit options so doesn't tell me where i was.

I know i'm using windows 7, but some 'tweaks' work the same as vista, hence i used some tips from Shawn's tips on 'how to speed up vista' over on the vista forum.

I do remember all i altered was tweak no.24, 'speed up the shutdown time', but since looking in there again it doesn't show the '0' or '1' option.

I know i'm not much help but it's so frustrating and was wondering if there was an option to re set the registry to default except reinstalling 7.

    Thanks for you replies.

    Hi suggsy,

I wonder if you have set the Virtual Memory Paging File to clear on shutdown. Depending on the size of this file, this can take quite a while and can add considerably to the shutdown time. Have a look here Virtual Memory Paging File - Clear at Shutdown - Vista Forums for instructions on how to enable/disable this feature. You will need to follow the instructions to disable this feature.

    Hi suggsy,

I'm pleased that you have resolved your problem. The function that I referred to, clearing the paging file on shutdown, is harmless but it does extend the shutdown time quite considerably. This is really intended for use on business systems where confidential data may remain after shutdown. This data can be retrieved from this file if the system is booted up into, say, a live version of Linux.
