I really like WIn7 but a few months on I had occasion to go back to XP for something and found it remarkably crisp. That can only mean my 7 install is already gaining extra pounds ...

Roger, I would up that 4gb RAM on 64 bit, consider trying 32 bit on comparison partitiion.

Run GWScan (WD Lifeguard) CD diagnostics/repair on HD, Windows Diag Mem test.

I would then clean reinstall til I get instantaneous response across the board, have come to expect that now of Win7 after a year.

WHen I go back to XP, it is like getting into an old car.

I have installed a new (to me) dvi video card on my system, which is running Win7 Hone version. My problem is that the monitor/card wants a high default resolution, which makes my icons/text to small.
