    Windows 7 on a pentium 4

    Ok, here's what I've got:

    2.8GHz pentium 4 CPU
    3.37 GB DDR333 RAM
    ATI Radeon HD 4670 w/ 1gb memory

I installed windows 7 home premium 32-bit on top of this, and I've been having issues. Sometimes the computer freezes at the login window, sometimes it freezes in the middle of running almost nothing at all, and if it doesn't end up freezing every little task brings the CPU usage up to 100%. It can't even play system sounds without bugging out. All the drivers are up to date and functioning properly. I'm at a loss of what to do, is my hardware too old? Please advise!

Did you do a clean install or an upgrade?
Did you take the Microsoft compatibilty test before you tried to install. (Upgrade Advisor)?

A single core CPU is obsolete. Build a new PC that will be and feel 3x faster.

A single core may be "obsolete" but Windows 7 will work just fine on it. What you describe sounds more like memory issues. Download memtest and run it.

Not if you multitask - it will choke.

Single cores aren't quite obsolete yet. I've got a 3.4Ghz EE Pentium IV that is still an awesome CPU when teamed with an Intel 865/875 mainboard, and I'm sure it'd find no difficulties in running Win 7...

Have you tried removing a couple of sticks of ram? see if it is a ram problem. Also your graphics card maybe causing this. Does sound like something hardware is messing with your install.I have 7 on an old p4 and it runs good. Not a heat problem? You have cleaned the inside of the case? Hows that power supply? Just a few thoughts, Good luck to you.

Errhm, that chip will multi-task very nicely, guess that's why they were principally in servers more than Joe Blows home PC. I'd love to find a suitable S478 dual processor board to see what a pair of them could do...
