Display only updates every ~5 seconds

(semi)SOLVED: I disabled the Display Adapter from the device manager and the problem stopped . . .

I recently decided to make the move from XP Pro to Win7 (32). I partitioned my existing drive for a (temp/try it out)dual-boot XP pro (50GB) / Win7(30GB). Win 7 installed without a problem.

Once reaching my desktop, however, I realized that inside my Win7 environment, my display only updates about once every five seconds. Processing is still going on the the background but I only receive a visual update every few seconds.

The cursor moves smoothly and doesn't experience this problem. I can load XP Pro and everything runs fine. I have updated my Radeon X1550 with the latest catalyst drivers. All memory and disk checks come back fine.

I'm a bit stumped on this one. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    *edit for clarification

All the hardware seems to be working fine and I have updated all drivers, but still no luck. It seems like the system is running fine, but I only get a visual update of it every five seconds.

For example: Music plays fine, but the progress bar only moves once every five seconds (jumping five seconds forward). Installations proceed at normal speed, but the visual output only happens once every five seconds.

Download FRAPS and post how many FPS you have at the desktop. Should be around 30.

I only seem to be able to show a FPS overlay when running a full-screen application. How might I run FRAPS at the desktop?

I'm running FRAPS 3.0.3 (free) and there doesn't appear to be a "monitor DWM" box. Thoughts?

Double check the tabs - there is a box.

I feel kind of ridiculous . . I'm not seeing this checkbox. I DLed an older version (2.8.0) and no luck either. Which tab should it be on?

I'm not sure - if you can't find it I would run 2 diagnostics:

    1) Seagate Seatools quick test - 5 min

    2) Memtest 86+ - 1 pass

    3) Prime 95 - 3hrs

Then update all your drivers with the guide in my sig. I have to run - sorry if I couldn't help more. Try the above steps.
