It's a new system and I'm still getting used to it but two things bug the devil out of me...first, I hate these over-sized icons. They use up maybe three times as much real estate as the icons in Xp.

Is there anyway to make them smaller or swap them out?

Second, I hate the gadget at the top of the screen. What to they call it? The docker? Everything on it is rehashed on the taskbar or in the Start menu.

How can I get rid of it?

    Hi, try this.

And hard to get rid of.
Not really...it can be uninstalled from Programs and Features. I do it on customer's machines all the time.

Yes Just left click on an icon lightly, to make a dark background. Then with Cntrl pressed adjust size with mouse wheel.
This does not work for me. Let's see if I got it right: First I have a two button trackball...no scroll wheel.

Then I click on the icon and hold ctrl and move the trackball. No joy. Then click on the icon and hold down ctrl and the left mouse button and move trackball and I get a new shortcut.

    any other ideas?

Go into 'display' (from control panel) and see if ticking 'smaller' makes the desktop icons smaller.
    Or...
You may have to borrow a scroll wheel mouse, if it doesn't. You can left click anywhere on the desk then hold down the ctrl key and use the scroll to make icons larger or smaller.

You should be able to resize the Desktop icons by right clicking on the Desktop, point to View, and select the icon size(Large, Medium, or Small).

That method only works if you have a 3-button (or a scroll wheel) mouse. As DWFII states, he only has an older 2-button model.

The only option available in this case is to right-click on the desktop, mouse over View and click on the required size option.
