    new computer & user accounts

Purchased new computer running windows 7. Have not yet booted it up for the first time
I'm confused on setting up the user accounts during the first go thru.
    Question:
When I get to the user account set-up portion, what user accounts should I be setting up?
The built in administrator account has me confused.
There will be just 2 of us (mom & dad), that will be using the computer regularly.
Should I be creating an account named 'owner', (with full rights)?
And than maybe mom & dad with partial rights?
    Help!

I think you will only be setting up the adminstrator account. I'm not quite sure.
It's fairly easy to set up new accounts later on with only partial rights.

There is a built in hidden Administrator account

Enable the (Hidden) Administrator Account on Windows 7 or Vista - the How-To Geek

You need to set up an adminstrator account, as many as you like. And standard user accounts as many as you like, later on. Based upon what you said, you would want one administrator account for yourself and one or two for mom and dad (they can be standard users)

The only difference in the accounts is that the Administrator can make changes that affect the entire system. The standard users cannot. They can make changes that affect only their account.

When you install, set up the administrator account. Once you are familiar with the system you can set up the other accounts. Its really easy. If you have problems, remember we are always here for you.

FooFoo, that confuses me even more. If there's already a 'built in' adminstrator, why would I set up another?

Rich, thank you. Would/could it get confusing if I named one of my user accounts 'adminstrator'? And the other two mom & dad.

That would normally not be a problem, except in cases when you might want to use the secret administrator account (it has power that the regular adminstrator account does not have) There may be confusion if two accounts are called adminstrator. Now that I think about it, probably not even allowed.

Just personal pereference, I think its nicer to name each one with something that means something to you. For example in my case, my account is richc46, just like my ID here. It has meaning for me.

Bottom line I would not call it adm. If you do not want to forget which is adm, Call it john(your name)adm.

Remember after you are set up, you are not alone. The entire membership of 7 forum is here for you.

Could you explain the extra power the secret account has. Inquiring minds want to know.

    Thanks,

    Hi Jim,

Its the First Account in Windows 7 which create after the OS install and by default it would be disable or hidden

Built-in Administrator Account - Enable or Disable

This tutorial will help you to enable this account which would pretty much give enough Administrator rights

    Hope this helps,
    Captain
