Windows 7: Nothing showing in "My Computer"

Nothing showing in "My Computer"

I've had Windows 7 Pro x64 installed for a few days now. When I view My Computer there are no drives shown. I have three hard drives and a DVD drive installed that were showing until .....

I wanted to hide one of my hard drives. I went to the Computer Management window. Clicked on "Disk Management". Then I right clicked the F: drive, which is the one I wanted to hide. I clicked on "Change Drive Letter and Paths". On the popup window I clicked "Remove". Another popup asked me if I was sure. I clicked "Yes". Then another popup warned me that continuing may cause programs to longer run. That's when I decided that maybe I shouldn't do it. I clicked "No". Everything seemed fine at that point, but when I opened My Computer it was empty.

I don't know if any of this caused the problem, but the last time I looked at My Computer, which was yesterday, everything was there.

I can view the contents of each drive by typing the drive letter into the text field in My Computer. But the drives themselves don't show when I firts open My Computer.

I tried doing a System Restore but that didn't fix the problem.

Windows 7 Enterprise (x64); Windows Server 2008 R2 (x64)

Have you tried completely powering off the computer, waiting 60 seconds and the powering back up?

I have seen missing drives show up after a cold shutdown and restart.

This may sound a bit far out but hey it worked for me...create a second id (make sure it is an administrator)...log on and see if those drives are showing there. If so it is something to do with just the settings on your existing id not the machine or Windows...go from there

Thanks for the help.

Boastree - I tried creating a second Admin Account, but still couldn't see the drives. I don't think its a problem with the hardware. Its a dual boot machine and everything works perfectly when running from the other drive.

computerplus - This didn't work either. I uninstalled all of the drives, rebooted, and they still weren't showing.

It could be that part of the registry is corrupt.

Here is a link.

Thanks, surfasb. I ran gpedit.msc, and it was showing that all of the drives had been restricted. All I had to do was disable that function and everything looked good. I can now see all of the drives in My Computer.
