Right click and Refresh now causes all the icons to move back to the left side of the screen.
I've got DesktopOk available, but it seems awfully backward to have to use a 3rd party application to get the operating system to do what it has always done in the past.
If your video card drivers were updated then it sometimes causes this or at least that is when I have had it happen. Lately with Nvidia's last few driver sets the icons have remained as they were when drivers were updated.
I would recomend a small program called "desktop icon position saver" and it probably can be searched for via yahoo or google very easily...it is the one I use and it is very simple...adds options to the right click menu to save and restore icon positions.
EDIT: I just did a search for it and I can't find it but I believe someone provided a link to the one I use in this thread earlier. The file name when you download it will be "dips64" for the 64 bit version. If you need me to email that version to you I can do so if you pm me with your email or email me directly at edilee012@comcast.net to request it if you can't pm me on this forum...I only have the 64 bit version.

Thanks for the input. If you'll note in one of my postings, I've got DesktopOk working fine. I'm glad to hear someone else say that they have seen an apparant link between various updates and odd behavior from the operating system.
I just find it strange that a function (turning off the AutoArrange feature of the desktop) that has been available in Win95, Win98, Win200, WinXP, and (I believe) in Vista, now requires all of these work-arounds to give myself the option of placing shortcut icons on my desktop where I would like them to be. (And yah, I've used each of the first 4 Windows versions since I started using computers back in the 80's.
Previous to the last 2-3 Nvidia driver update everytime I installed new drivers it would place all my icons on the top half of the screen only and all out of order. This is when I got the program I mentioned since I have a fair amount of icons I like to be in certain locations.
My issue also might have something to do with me having a SLI system but who knows.

This borders on a topic for a new thread, but are you aware of any logs that track most or all updates? It sure would be nice to be able to know what various software companies are doing to MY computer. Most updates (Microsoft, Firefox, etc.) seek permission to perform updates, but I know I've got HP printer software that was recently updated without any announcement.
No I am not aware of any but someone else might know about that one. Every program I install that will require updates normally has an option to NOT check for updates automatically so you can do it manually...this is the option I normally choose and I periodically check for the updates myself. I do this mainly to reduce the amount of start up items running because these auto updaters add themselves to the start up in msconfig. Some things are configured to check for updates when they open which is more to my liking..I think DivX is like that and Firefox....I leave those as is.
