That registry fix was EXACTLY what I needed... only thing I did that would be suspect was let VAIO run a "Registry Cleaner" from the maintenance package... guess they just cleaned the need to run executables right out of my registry... nice job SONY.
The registry fix on the Microsoft KB page didn't work for this problem, but yours did.
FIXED!
I created a new user in cmd prompt:
net user desiredusername desiredpassword /add
than if you want to add that username to the admin group
net localgroup administrators desiredusername /add
Restarted and logged in as newly created user and then typed RUN in start menu search, clicked on run, then typed sfc /scannow hit enter (with my windows 7 sp1 64 bit disk in the drive) and I can now open .exe's, run malwarebytes immediately and good luck.
Just thought I should put an answer on this thread so many keep telling us to download default_exe.reg to fix the registry which seldom fixes the problem.

To FIX this win 7 .exe problem:
Create new user in cmd:
net user desiredusername desiredpassword /add
than if you want to add that username to the admin group
net localgroup administrators desiredusername /add
Restart then login to new user.
Run sfc /scannow in the run box
Install Malwarebytes do your updates for malwarebytes full scan immediately. Then install a different virus scanner and do the most extreme deep/full scan possible.

Hello, thanks for great work I have downloaded your extension fixes several times now!
I wanted to ask if you can show me a way, that would do the reverse process for EXE extension and would "mess it up" so exe files can not be opened.
it sounds silly but I would find very good use for it when cleaning viruses and spyware.

Sorry, but we cannot help you here with that since it will harm any computer it is applied to.
well not really. In fact, I today discovered that its very useful to have exe extensions broken. this virus I was cleaning did it on its own and what happened then, on start up none of the viruses were running either cause none of the .exe files could be started.
so I was able to then fix exe extensions and run malwarebytes to clean things out. because some of the spyware now runs in safe mode too and its tough to clean it out. so I thought if I could "mess up" exe extension, then start computer and immediately fix extensions I could then run anti spyware software with no one interfering. :-P
but hey if you can't help thats fine.
