    Sort is stupid slow

    I have a fairly large data folder - 2000+ files and 620MB.

Computer does never seems to get finished loading it. If I change the sort order to e.g. Date, it starts all over again. We're talking 15-20 mins here.

Yes, it is set to be indexed.

    What.
    the.
    heck?

I recall a lot of intense complaining about this on Vista and don't know if it has been improved on Win 7.

I never run into that issue, but I categorize stuff with a lot of nested subfolders. I assume you can't do that for some reason?

I don't have any single personal data folder with more than a couple of hundred files.

Just did a few random resorts and it was virtually instantaneous.

What types of files are slow to sort?

What are you sorting by when it is slow or does it matter?

It doesn't seem to matter what factor I sort by. Mixed files - jpgs and pdfs for the most part.

The indexing bar goes green pretty quick until it is almost at the end , then it just seems to stall.

Pretty darn hard to sort it into subfolders when you can't even sort by type! Are there superior third party file managers? Crikey, this sure seems fundamental to any file system. I mean, isn't that why computers were invented?

What are you using for an AV? I'm not sure that it is related to your problem or not, but I had MSE installed until just a while ago, and the reason that I uninstalled it was because of it delaying the displaying of files when opening a folder.

While it is sorting, have you checked within the Task Manager or Process Explorer to see what kind of activity is going on and what process is active at the time?

As far as file managers go, I like the 2xExplorer:

Download 2x Explorer - Freeware Software - Tucows

Whether it would effect your problem, I don't know.

Good thought. Avast and Panda. Might need to ditch one of them.

It is never a good idea to run multiple AVs. Pick one and go with it.

If you right-click on the folder, select "properties", then "customize", then under "Optimize for" select "General Items", that may help
