Windows 7: Shortcuts and start menu went POOF.

I've tried safemode as well, which led me to conclude that it's probably a broken or corrupt file since the result is exactly the same. No icons and a broken taskbar.

Solved:

Apparently this problem is a manifestation of a fix I used a long time ago to remove the short cut arrows on the icons. Restoring the original settings in the registry will fix the problem or you could use this.

For some reason whenever I try to remove shortcuts from the start menu (by right click>remove from this list), it doesn't do anything. Start menu shortcuts not working
http://oi45.tinypic.com/4ibo1e.jpg I have attached a screen shot of the issue I have, recently after installing a new programs and going to the start menu to use it, it only shows the relevant folder only but not the shortcuts. This is really troublesome and hope to get some help. Thanks.

Cannot repin start menu shortcuts
Shortcuts dissappeared pin menu shows up but won't pin after running Cobain backup ths occurred , Tried several restore points with no success. No infection.

Start Menu Shortcuts - Permanent MRU!
Occasionally when I install programs, they create permanent shortcuts in the MRU area of the Start Menu. Normally I can delete them by deleting the original icon (in All Programs) and making a new one to replace it. Scumbag companies (e.g. EPSON, Samsung) seem to have "wised up" to this tactic...
