How full can my hard drive get...

When dealing with computers these days, anytime it has active cooling (fans) versus passive (no fans), that's better.

My "My Book"s are never standing up. They're on their side on the computer rack. This way they won't "fall over" and get damaged. Also I almost never move them. Even with all the safeguards today's harddrives have, they're not really designed to be mobile. Granted, the ones that are designed to be mobile are pretty resilent, but it's still a device with a moving part that has to be precise by microns. Call me old-fashioned if you like, but I try to keep those things are physically stable as possible.

With all that said, the passport style drives you have are designed to be tossed in purses and backpacks and jostled around by people who don't think about things like cooling and impact damage. They're supposed to stand up to such abuse.

Once again though, the old adage of "make something idiot proof and they'll build a better idiot" holds true here. I remember plenty of times people bringing me their broken laptops, I go to take it out of the bag, and it's too hot to touch. They had left it on -- in the bag! Or worse, they left their laptop out on the seat of their car from the morning and brought it in the late afternoon. It had been sitting in the hot car baking all day. I'm in south Louisiana. It's not unheard of for the interior of a car to reach 120 F or more degrees during the summer. It's kind of common actually.

As for your particular case, if you plan to leave the drive stable 90% of the time or more, you should go with a My Book design. If for nothing else than you get a lot more gigabyte per dollar. If you plan to have the drive be portable and carry around at least 50% of the time, the passport would be suited since it should be designed for such constant motion.
