    Win7

hi all, just upgraded my m8's laptop from xp to win7, before i did this he backed up all his relevant docs/music/photos usual stuff to an external HD, now when i gave him back said lappy he tried to copy all the files from hd back to lappy by moving them back to lappy, now he has told me when the hd is plugged in to lappy everything works fine music plays photos display but with hd removed nothing happens, i did tell him to move it all back to relevant places, he says he tried and still nothing so anyone got any ideas as to what this problem might be plz.

    TIA.

He either has or hasn't moved them back over, saying "tried" doesn't clear that up, because it could mean he cant get them back over at all.

From your description of the results of the "moving" it suggests to me that maybe he has created shortcuts to the original files located on the external drive nrather than move the originals.

Just a thought but worth checking :)

i think you've cracked it there Barman , its so easy to create a shortcut without copying the files over

this would get my vote. tell him to rightclick and copy instead of dragging. the behavior of creating shortcuts by mistake happens when you try to drag files to a new location. i do not recommend dragging files, as not all will copy but rather create shortcuts.

edit: he may also want to add copyto / moveto to his rightclick menu. dowload and tutorial below.

@all, thanks for the replies, i have told him to copy all backed up stuff then paste it, to lappy he said he tried that too, he has got the copy to / move to on right key too but will pass on tips and see if that helps him, i think he created short-cuts too!
